Voltage regulator for generator
 

Which voltage regulators are currently available? I am not asking about the cutout with a diode. I do not see any regulators in any of the parts houses books that I have. What is currently available and where can I get them?

The FunProjects regulators have been the most popular, sold by several vendors, but the chip used in them has been discontinued, and no more are available. Tom Wesenberg has had a generator mod for 6V positive ground that many have installed, but you'll have to contact him for availability.

Toms EVR works well, actually works great. But it needs a good cut-out to go along with it.

John Regan's Fun Projects regulator uses two shottky type diodes if I remember correctly. This is for the one way current flow or cut out. The other components use high speed switching to turn the generator on an off for amperage/voltage control. There is not much in there but what is has to do the job. A lot of electronic components that used to be made here in the USA are made overseas now. The CVD 19 situation may be preventing shipments or manufacture of things but I don't know. I also don't know how well the Birdhaven folks have been keeping up with this stuff since they purchased the rights. I would call them to confirm no availability problems.

They are a decent little regulator set up but they are sensitive to amperage or voltage spikes and can be easily damaged if the operator isn't careful. A person should make sure the engine is off before disconnecting the battery and I don't know it the units can take a jump start or not. The low battery can damage them due to too high a charge rate with low voltage.

I'll second that. They are hard to beat with an original properly restored cutout, or a diode cutout either way. Using a diode cutout you have to snip a small wire on the EVR. Tom sends an instruction sheet with them.

I'd bet that he is out of them, and not making any more at the present time. He has a lot of projects in the fire right now. They sell out fast whenever he gets the time to make some up.

The one James Peterson used to make sounds similar the description in post #2. His were designed to attach to the dust cover band inside the generator. They likely both work a similar way except that I believe one of them replaces the 3rd brush so it's likely fully controlling the field current. They may both do that though I don't know. The Fun Projects unit only requires that the 3rd brush be adjusted to a specific amperage setting to work with it but it does work in a different way than the others.

Tom's EVR's work great.
Your generator is converted to a 2 brush and his EVR is a true regulator of the field current.
I have theming both of my cars.

The Funproject type regulator has been on back order/out of stock way before the C19 thing.
