My 1st Model A (non Hotrod) 1 Attachment(s)
Hi all
After owning a few hotrodded model A's Im about to purchase my 1st close to stock one, a 30 Coupe. To be honest am kind of excited about that! Now Im in Japan and the car will be shipped to me and at the same time would like to bring across maintenance items etc as sourcing them here is difficult. Having never owned a stocker, plan is to keep it mostly that way although it already has 36 16" wheels and a few other subtle changes. That being said what would be some good service items to pick up? Also interested in maintenance books etc to guide me. Any and all other advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Pete |

Re: My 1st Model A (non Hotrod) It is a little hard to say without knowing the car and how it is equipped and/or modified.
I would get basic tune-up parts (points, condenser, plugs), but you would need to know if it has original points or "modern" points, or potentially converted to electronic ignition. Spares I like to keep handy.... carburetor, starter, generator. I have an extra of each that I picked up at shows and reconditioned and tested. Some guys carry a spare distributor. That may be a bit much to start with. Around here they are easy to pick up at shows. What do you know about the seller? Can you ask them about spares that they kept around? What are the condition/age of the tires? How many miles are on the clutch? What oil do they use? They are really not high maintenance cars, but you may have to have spares shipped all the way from the states. I don't know if they had much of a presence in Japan. They were pretty common in Australia, and those were right-hand drive. Regardless, good luck, Ken |

Re: My 1st Model A (non Hotrod) It would be good to have someone look at it and tell you what is needed.
Starting with the brakes, if the drums haven't been replaced it might be a good idea to get a new set already mounted on hubs with linings etc. to ship with the car. These are heavy items that need to go by sea. Sending them later by air will most likely be prohibitive. |

You are right about that Ken and Burner31, it is VERY unusual to see cars like these where I live. In 6 years here I've only seen a couple rods come through. Cheers Pat for the correction on the wheels. I must have remembered that wrong. Brad that book looks awesome, sadly I couldnt read it but my wife can :) Updraught Im buying the car from a Ford Barn member and sounds like its been well maintained. Had a nice chat with him this evening and Im confident its been sorted out but I do like the idea of an extra set of linings etc, cheers. Ken thanks for the detailed respsonse besides the wheels its fitted with a T170, 12v alt, model B distributor, cam and carb and possibly a head but need to confirm that. So your suggestion of points condensor and plugs is a great idea. Having not owned a banger before any suggestions for good suppliers of those? Once again thanks for you help gents, never though I would get so excited about a fairly stock A :) |

Re: My 1st Model A (non Hotrod) If you ever visit Tokyo, in the Edo-Tokyo Museum there, on display (Section T6 - Modern Tokyo), is a 1930 Fordor which was used as a taxi in Japan.

Re: My 1st Model A (non Hotrod) Great looking car and welcome to the club. Here is my two cents worth. It sounds like it is coming over in a container. Get back up alt/gen/starter/head/radiator anything you may want that is heavy shipped with it. Otherwise it will kill you to ship it later. As long as it is solid, then it should just be the small stuff you will need and any supplier will have that and be able to ship.
