Intro and new '31 Sedan
 

I've been lurking awhile and thought I'd share some photos of my Tudor. I presently desire to keep it basically stock, but be better suited for modern roads. Currently it runs and drives well.
I do have a couple of concerns though. #1. Water pump leaks and is throwing water in the engine compartment. It has one grease fitting near the fan and some kind of grease cup with a cap on the block end. I also don't have the tool to tighten the packing nut. I'd hate to use a channel lock on it.
#2. The drive train seems to cause vibration/harmonic in the floor as I'm accelerating.
#3. The front seat is not so comfortable. Will it be more comfortable if I reupholster and add new foam? Or were they uncomfortable when they were new?

Do a search and you can find info on all your questions . Also you can find info on how dangerous original 2 blade steel fans are . Is your fan blade original ?

Look into meeting and joining a local Model A club. Order model A books from Model A suppliers. How to repair your Model A and their catalogs. The water pump is a easy fix or replace. Great looking car. This is a Great site and you can get a lot here.

Hey Hotrod, welcome. Get on the passenger side and use a screwdriver to catch under the tabs on the packing nut and lever it down to tighten the nut. Also the water pump uses special grease at the rear. Not chassis lube. Others will chime in also. There is a soft packing behind that nut, don't go too tight. I've used channelocks on the nut with no dire effects also.

I concur with joining a local chapter. You will get advice as to what to fix, where to get parts etc. This is a place to get questions answered but having someone there to show you the ropes is always good. This is a great hobby and hope to see you along the Model A highway one of these days.

Welcome to the barn! You have a very nice car there. Ok in answer to your questions, #2 some vibration is normal, but if it is abinormal then it is possible that something may be out of whack like the clutch. #3, if the seat springs are compressed then the only way to fix the ride is to redo the springs. You can always just add padding and then a cover.

You may want to ditch the second fuel filter. Clean the sediment bowl out, along with the tank and you will not have any problems. Oh yeah, don't throw anything away!

From the pictures it appears your car may have an original steel fan blade installed. You can search the posts to see the comments about those fans. They have a history of throwing blades. If it were my car I would replace it with one of the new aluminum 2 blade fans. And while at it install a leakless water pump.
Put a magnet on the fan. If it sticks it is steel.

Welcome to the barn. I am new on The Barn too. Your Tudor looks great and in very nice shape. Anything and everything you want to know is on this wonderful site.

Nice looking Tudor, Hotrod. Welcome aboard. From the appearance of the seats in your photo, the springs and/or padding may be tired. The seat covers are not as Henry built things, so I imagine someone attempted to restore the seats at some point. I find the seats in our Tudor reasonably comfortable, though they're not the best I've sat on! With a good restoration, you may see good improvement in comfort.

In the meantime, enjoy your A and join a club!

Thanks for all the replies. I'm really liking this Model A and just started some general maintenance. So far I've changed the oil, checked the plugs, worked on the water pump and greased the front end. Tomorrow I'll change the trans and diff fluid.

This car is 100% Henry steel with no rot and never restored. Also it's thought to have 16,500 original miles. It appears to have been brush painted along time ago and has had a right rear fender replaced. This fender was replaced prior to the last 2 owners of 35-40 years. The left front fender was replaced at least before the last owner 10 years ago. It seems to be a excellent fitting quality piece other than the crease is a little different from the left front.

The seats just have covers on them and the padding seems to be very poor if not a little lumpy.

The water pump has excessive end play and I'm thinking this and the fan may be a source of my vibration.

Tudor Seats are the worst!!! Uncomfortable ect. I put 97 escort seats in mine with mods to bolt in like the originals. Way more comfortable, plus adjustable .

I just did the water pump on my 1930 Pickup. It wasn't too bad to do if you follow his instructions in the book. I took the radiator out and got a new water pump from Snyder's.

Great looking truck. A truck is what I was originally after, but thought the Tudor was too nice pass up. I'll probably resume my search for a truck next year after I sell another car I have. I did pick up a '39 v8 trans though.
