Went for a drive tonight and the car started acting funny at red lights. It would stall if I did not give it a little gas. Made it to dinner and back but it was quite the trip. Once home I started it and at idle, gas is coming up through the hole the accelerator pump rod goes down. Gas comes out and floods the top of the carb. If I give it gas it goes away and runs great. Let it idle and within a few seconds, gas comes back up the hole and out all over the top of the carb. Any thoughts? It is a brand new English stromberg 97 I have had on the car since last year which has the grose jet needle and seat. That looks fine. Float looks fine. I have the early style steel bowl pump. Did that go bad??

Sounds like the needle is not seating correctly .. or float is way out . Maybe change to one of the Grosse ones if it hasnt got one .

If you remove the fuel inlet you will probably notice it is NOT a needle and seat but
the S Jet. If S Jet replace with conventional needle and seat.....recheck float setting.
I've changed a bunch.

It has the grose jet style needle and seat. It is what comes with the new stromberg carbs. I tried tapping on it while running but it did nothing. I thought the grose jets were far and away better than the needle and seat versions. This carb is only a year old. Shame that you have issues after a year and spending $500.

The inlet valve in the new Stromberg can be VERY sensitive to any particles in the fuel and/or any corrosion. Some get removed and cleaned and others get replaced.

Easy there. My car has been on the road driving for over 10 years and never had these problems before swapping engines. Gas tank, lines, all the same.

Grose-Jet. Another solution looking for a problem. Seems to be increasingly common these days.

I was never impressed with the Grosse Jet (s-jet). I did a six '97 setup for a friend's 371 Olds in a '32 coupe, and there were flooding issues on two of the carbs. When I rebuilt them, I applied vacuum to the fuel inlets to check the valve closing (like I do on all carbs) and not all of the Grosse Jet valves held vacuum. I'm for conventional fuel valves for these carbs.

As for grose ball style for the NH carbs in several T's they had fuel delivery problems. Changed with the good old needle and seat and puuurs like a kitten.

Van this new gas today gives us all headaches no matter the make or model, send it out and have Charlie go through it and she will be fine:D

John is right on with crap and floaters in the system giving you trouble. I just love the new larger poly tank I put in my 39, keep the stabilizer in the fuel as well.

What is the history on the fuel pump that's on there now? Has it been working well in the past? What gas pressure is it delivering to the carb? Could it be over powering the grose jet?
