Voltmeter install

Going to do the 6 to 12 volt changeover. Has anyone or can it be done to replaced the amp meter with a aftermarket voltmeter in the panel itself. I'm thinking that I might have to space out the gauge with a ring spacer from the panel & enlarge the hole. Unless I can find a stubby voltmeter. Not worried about the wiring I can figure that out.

why? a voltmeter tells you little.

Just remember a voltmeter and amp meter are connected differently. Amp meter in series with the wires from battery to vehicle. Voltmeter across the connection and have to connect the wires from the battery to the vehicle together.

Re: Voltmeter install

A voltmeter is very useful as a troubleshooting device, and to keep an eye on battery and charging system health. However, an inaccurate or imprecise voltmeter like what is on most modern cars is basically worthless. I would leave the ammeter in, then install a good quality precise digital voltmeter under the dash. Make sure you filter the input or it will not tolerate the hash on the Model A system.

I kept the ammeter in my car but added a voltmeter under the dash. There are voltmeters available from the suppliers that are reasonably accurate and a mount is available from the suppliers too.

The ammeter is handy to have to check for current draw. The voltmeter is very important to have as you can check the battery health and if the generator or alternator is charging to the correct voltage. If the battery is low before you start the car then it may need replacement.

Accurate voltmeters that will fit are available from electronics suppliers.
You can tell a lot more about the system with a voltmeter if you know what to look for.

Re: Voltmeter install

I recently installed a 6V alternator and am interested in a voltmeter. Does anyone have a suggestion for an accurate one that can install under the dash with an analog readout that mimics the old style gauges?
