Are there any tricks on removing the grill on a 1940 Ford? Does the grill come out separately? Thanks

The grille in both the standard and deluxe bolts to the front fenders. Remove the bolts on the bottom which attach to the radiator pan. Then remove the bolts on each fender that attach to the grille sides. Grille should then come out. Be aware there are air deflectors that "sandwich" between the grille and the front fenders and those will come loose when taking out the grille. The deluxe grill will also separate from the louvered sides if you need to change just the center part of the grille.

The number 1 "trick" or rule is not to force anything into or out of position when removing or installing the 40 Ford grill. The pot metal will not take the stress. You might want top take photos so you can recall how it all fits together.

Einstein: Are you seeking info. on how to remove ONLY the chrome 2 piece grille or the entire 2 piece chrome grille and the two vented side panels?

If you are installing only the 2 piece chrome grille you don't need to remove the vented panels.

Let us know your intentions.

Einstein, Before you start taking the front grille assembly apart, do a Google Search and and see what others have done AND get instructions from the manufacturer.. Hopefully you have the instructions that came with your AC unit. If not, I would contact those folks mentioned in various posts on what the best procedure is. Send them an email or a PM and then actually talk with them on the phone. Most folks like to share information and experience. Here's a start.

If you do find you need to remove the entire grille and side vent assembly. You want to make sure you take assembly apart in a sequence that seems logical and won't allow grille to get damaged by dropping it or stressing it. Put a nice soft blanket below your work area.
Apply tape to protect painted surfaces. You might even consider making a magic marker marking on each bolt so you can reassemble the grille with the same bolts in the exact same holes. I have removed the grille assembly years ago and I recall I did the following:

1. Take photos as you go.
2. Make notes as to which bolts and nuts go where for reassembly.
3.Remove radiator drip pan below radiator. Then remove filler panel bolted to bottom of chin pan.
4. Unbolt and remove left and right side panels attached to each fender.
5.Unbolt and remove vertical sheet metal panel that's bolted to top cross bar in front of radiator and also secures vertical chrome strip on exterior of grill halves.
6. Remove the 2 top bolts that secure top of grille in place on the cross bar.
7.Carefully double check and carefully remove entire assembly.

I am writing this from memory so, as you go along, decide if it the sequence makes sense. If not, make corrections. I hope others will chime in and correct me.

Do a dry in your mind of the procedure I have described above BEFORE you begin
so as to see if it makes sense and makes you comfortable.

I would not recommend loosening the fenders from the cowl but loosening the Y brace between the two fenders may help. Same with the two "twisted" sheet metal straps that bolt radiator to each inner fender panel. Consider and critique all this advice as you proceed.
