Rear Hub Seal 2!
 

Thanks for the answers in my previous post.... But.. I have a hub puller etc, reallly want to know about the seal, can it be removed and a new one put in with basic handyman mechanic tools or do I need specialised tools? Just want to be forarmed so to speak, I dont know what I'm getting into, which usually means weeks of having the car off the road, if you know what I mean

Yes , once the hub is off you'll see a snap ring that must be removed then the seal and bearing can be removed . A seal puller makes the job a little easier but I've done it many times using the claws of a claw hammer of a big screwdriver and hammer to pry it out.

Or, once you remove the circlip,put a sheet of news paper on the concrete floor,put a set of ear muffs on,and lift the hub up and drop it face down a few times,the seal and roller bearing will come out.

Easy to do. Remove snap ring and old seal. Install new seal with the proper "face" pointing out towards the wheel. I put a dab of oil on the outer edge of the seal. Tap it in gently with a ball peen hammer to get it started. Then use a flat object and a ball peen hammer to seat it evenly. I think I used an aluminum punch also. The install snap ring. Good idea to grind the angle of the snap ring so it is easier to remove next time in 10 or 15 years. Be sure to re-grease the bearing while you have it out. I think the correct grease is the fiberous grease STA LUBE # SL#!#! Drum Bearing grease. Don't pack the hub full of grease. If there is a grease fitting behind the backing plate for greasing the rear bearing DO NOT USE IT as the grease usually ends up on your brake shoes. It was not one of Henry's better ideas. Your car may not have that fitting. I hung a little copper tag near it saying DO NOT USE THIS GREASE FITTING. Last photo .PS: There is only one snap ring for for the hub. Here's the grease thread.

The roller bearing grease seal does not prevent differential oil from leaking. In order to replace the oil seal inside the axle housing means you need to pull the differential apart and remove the seal and replace with a thread rod from inside the axle housing. That means a spring spreader etc. to disassemble the axle housings.

Guys;

Common to first try to place a small after market seal over the axle

press fit into the bore of rear axle housing bearing bung -- lip

seals on the axle-- maybe a couple. There was also a flanged style.

Worth a try! Always replace original oil seals if rear axle apart.

Thanks, great info. I dont seem to have a snap ring!! This is how it is as pulled off the axle. Do you think maybe the seal wasnt pushed in far enough?

Yes, I don't think it was pushed in far enough to see the snap ring groove.

Hi Gene, so you mean to leave as is for a start and find a seal that will fit between axle and the ''Big Shiney Bit '' the hub runs on? (I dont know what its called!!)As per pic. As an aside, it really only leaked because the diff was overfilled .

Is the hub original Ford or new replacement? The new ones I have do not use a retaining ring. Also the seal is larger diameter than Ford. Ford will not work. Speedway sells the correct seal for the new ones.

fordlovr. I notice you don't have the "oil/grease catch pits" (see pic) installed. Were they off when you the brake upgrade was done, or were they not there originally? When I changed to the newer style brakes on my '46, two of the "catches" were installed upside down at some time. There is a bit of a reservoir in the bottom section to catch any leakage that would get on the brakes.

The new replacement MT Products replacement hubs do use a snap ring in front of the grease seal. The big roller bearing will have space behind the snap ring to also move laterally so to prevent "brinelling". At least, that's my theory.

When the mechanic installed the New Boling Bros Brakes, he didnt refit the ''catch pits'', I think I will put them on!!
