Synchro Ring Clearances

1 Attachment(s)
Hi Guys,
I'm searching for a noise in my 3 speed transmission and have found that the brass synchro rings seam to have excessive clearance between the neighbouring gear.
The front ring (1.) has .0935" and the rear (2) has .0755"

Is this adjustable? I cant seam to find any reference to it in Mac VP's wonderful book so it may not be an issue. I can easily move them with my finger.

Any suggestions appreciated.

The brass syncro rings have tiny thread like ridges on the area that runs on the gear taper. When new the ridges are sharp, after wearing down they will get loose where you stated, that will cause hard shifting a little later on.

When that gap is zero the syncronizers are worn out.

Vac VPs recommendations are .060" to .080. Here is a link.

The grooves in the tapered face also need to be there. Some repros are smooth and they need those grooves. Slot dimensions have to be good as well. Some of the new stuff is crap.
