Mystery Engine Part

1 Attachment(s)
I have had a bad clutch judder in my 40 ford engine and today I pulled the sump off as a PO had fitted an 11 inch clutch and I couln't get the pressure plate out.
When I dropped the sump this broken half spacer? fell out on the floor. I'm not sure where the other half is as it doesn't appear to be in the engine.

The only place I can see where it belongs is in front of the oil slinger (#6310)
and fits between that and the front pulley. It has the same ID as the crank snout.

Is this correct and can you buy this part? I looked on Van P's site drawings and it does not show this and does not list a #

I also have a 59A engine and it does not have this spacer.

I wonder if the PO had a starter drive spring break in the past? It looks to me like a piece of a starter spring drive? Both ends are ruff and looks like the shape of the starter drive.

Good diagnosis. I agree.

It could be . It has a slight twist in it but it is a perfect fit on the crank snout.
It also appears like it had a small keyway type cut out each side where it has broken.

I'll have a look at the starter tomorrow. thanks

Yes, indeed it looks like the remnants of a broken starter spring. And the ID is close to the OD of the front crank snout. ( 1-5/16")

Was it inside the sump, or just hanging on the outside? I can't see how it would get inside.

I had the same thought at first, believe he is referring to the back part of the pan which is actually the lower bellhousing cover.

Great info guys. I compared it to a starter spring and that definately where it has come from.
I had the engine on a stand and when I levered the sump off it twisted away from me and I didn't see where this bit came from but I heard it hit the concrete floor.

It was covered in black oil and I thought it had come from inside the engine section of the sump pan and couldn't figure it out but after you guys identifyed it I saw that there was some old oil in the bottom of the bell housing section as well so it must have been lying in that.

Thanks for the help. took a load off my mind.
