160 deg. thermostat questions
 

i'm puting a hot water heater in my A, non presurized radiator. inlet to heater out of water neck on head. WILL the unpresurized system push water throw the heater?? i thought about using a 160 thermostat between neck and rad. to give some pressure to divert some water to heater???? ALSO a friend said to drill some xtra holes in the thermostat to increase some more water flow thru it??? has a new radiator w/12 fin-inch, want to tour w/car.

Yes, the water pump will push SOME water through your heater, but it will do it a lot better if it's working against the slight back pressure from a thermostat. Plus, your water will be a lot hotter sooner with a thermostat; in my experience, without a thermostat your heater will be nearly useless (Michigan winter) even if there is lots of flow. A 180-degree stat will work even better, but a 160 is usable. Be sure your water outlet to the heater is between the water pump and the stat. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND the Vintage Precision thermostat block which has taps for heater hose and temperature gauge. THe block has small bypass holes machined in so it shouldn't be necessary to drill extra holes in the stat. I believe that I drilled a 1/8" hole in mine, just to be sure. The concern is that if coolant flow is TOTALLY blocked during warm up, local hotspots might occur, possibly causing vaporization, overflow blown back out the radiator overflow tube, and motor damage. Also, some flow by the thermostat's sensor pellet is good to be certain the stat is getting a good reading of the average coolant temperature in the head. Such bypass is in addition to that provided by the tiny hole stat flanges typically have to allow trapped air to bleed out should, for example, should any get trapped when coolant is added or changed.

The spring goes to the engine side.
The pointy dealy-doo should be pointing at the radiator.

His pictures show the correct orientation.

Yes - Sir My hot water heater is located under the drivers front seat, it is a small unit with the air exiting both side with the small 6 volt motor hang downward through a small round hole in the floor board. As stated it can get cool in the Rocky Mountains in the morning and make the Miss much happier

Oh - I should add that my thermostat is located inside the rubber hose .. I can’t recall the details but I recall it was from a 80’s car and around 160 F .. My hot water takeoff is brazed onto the neck and results in lots of flow + there is A 1/8 inch hole drilled in the body to ensure it doesn’t vapour lock .., zero problems in 8 years plus

To expand a little the carb is used on forklifts and the like and with the exception of the GAV will work the same in the A.
