Back when States did this -- how did the Model A Era handle the requirement.

Had my '28 pickup tested on an old analyzer and it came up clean, they had to punch in 65 Mustang to get a reading from the computer. As long as it is tuned well it would pass the normal smog requirement. My '70 VW van on the other hand wouldn't pass with it's 66 Porsche 911 engine. They kept trying to plug in the VW van body but when they got smart & plugged in the engine it passed. How do you smog a car body?

Most states would exempt vehicles of a certain age.

Some places in Oregon had inspections back in the old days at least in Portland. Without looking it up, 30's up maybe into 50's. Mostly it was safety and visual inspection for too much smoke coming out the tail pipe.

I got to run mine on the NJ emission test, of course it wasn't listed, i went with Honda civic, about same weight--it would pass as a 2000, got it to fail as a 2005 --if you want the actual numbers i will look for the printout

I figure if the driver behind you can tell what colour your car is, it passes.

Emissions, why go through that when that. when I lived in NJ I never had any of my vehicle's inspected ( 76 dodge, 49 Plymouth,88 GMc, 31Model A) Now I'm TX with a Model A

Maybe its me, but I am not willing to play by some stupid government regulations I just want to drive my car.

In NJ, anything over 25 yrs old never required an emissions. It would classify as an antique.


Emissions didnt begin till 1968 in the US, so not sure what state would have ever required a model A to have emissions inspections?

In N.J. in the 60's had my ccpu registered with regular plates (don't believe QQ's were available at the time) I always passed state inspection but they gave up trying to test the stock headlights,as long as they lit the let it go.

The problem is they make the rules and if you want to move the car out of your driveway, you must follow their rules or move to another state. Maybe not nice but Plain and simple!
well frankly, I dont inspect my pu trucks, even though they are supposed to be and believe it or not- never given a ticket for such.
new law in NJ is that if your car is 1996 or older, you dont need to inspect under any conditions..........so yes, you can drive down the road with a crooked frame and nobody cares.

Remember, rules are sometimes meant to be broken.... :)

When A's were new, no inspections were required, known now as the good old days!

In New Jersey there was inspection--- they had a drive on brake machine that showed the action of each wheel---- even the owner of the car could see it, 4 tube like large thermometer with red fluid, front end jacked up and wiggled, headlights tested for aim and brightness, all lights working properly, glass for cracks

For judging a emissions test could be used as a indicator of engine restoration--- properly restored to original specifications would not have a problem---
