1940 Ford Convertible Top Frame shoulder bolts 1 Attachment(s)
Does anyone have a source for the 1940 convertible top frame shoulder bolts? I especially need to find the two smaller ones that attach the rear steel bow to each side of the top frame. The shoulder diameter is 3/8”. Thread size is 5/16-18. About an inch long or so. See pic.

Re: 1940 Ford Convertible Top Frame shoulder bolts If you can't find them, you could make some by turning down a 3/8 dia. stainless bolt on a lathe and then cut new threads. I have had success doing that.

Re: 1940 Ford Convertible Top Frame shoulder bolts Totally Stainless should have what you need. They make convertible top bolts along with many other products including various kits. Excellent quality.

Re: 1940 Ford Convertible Top Frame shoulder bolts I had to have the top iron bolts made for my '39 conv. Originally they were chrome plated, the replacements I found did not have the correct shoulders and the heads were small. I had a machine shop make the bolts out of stainless steel then I polished the heads.

Here are scans from an original 1940 parts book showing the various shouldered bolts used on 1940 Ford (model 66) and Mercury convertible (model 76) and convertible sedan (model 74).
I would be careful with Totally Stainless, While their quality is superb their interchange is suspect as their catalog lists 1939-40 convertible... the two years are different. Compare the specs of what you need to what you have. |
Re: 1940 Ford Convertible Top Frame shoulder bolts Thank you for the advice. Tried to reply earlier and describe an alternate approach that I took. Bought two chrome bolts and a 3/8 OD steel fuel line, which is 5/16 ID. I cut 1/2” lengths of the tube which acted as sleeves or shoulders for the bolts. Worked perfectly.

Re: 1940 Ford Convertible Top Frame shoulder bolts I do have some original bolts, could be re-chromed. PM me your email address.
