Replacing rear motor mount
 

It’s time to replace the passenger side rear motor mount. Since I’ve not doe this before on an intact car, what can I look forward to ? Can I just support the engine and transmission and swap the old and new ones ??

Yes, That's how I did mine, however I had to put a bottle jack and a 4x4 across to spread the frame a tad to fit the new ones in. Once I got started I replaced both sides and the result is vastly improved. Best of success and keep everyone posted on your progress please.

Doing the mounts with engine in is a significant job. Remove muffler, floorboards etc to gain access.
As was said in above post and is good advice you will need to support the engine with a JS k from below and will need a bottle or mechanical jack to move the engine a little to get the new mount in with new rubber . If oh have a frame spreader you can use it as well although it can be in the way.
Do one side first and then the other. I typically do the drivers side first. Ahead blow hammer may be handy to help get them back in place.
Make sure you have the spacers and rubber placed correctly.
A little gojo hand soap or light grease on the engine side can help when trying to get things lined up and in place .

A tip on starting the two engine mounting bolts, grind a slight bevel on threads to make for easy starting.

I recently changed to a set of float-a-motors and getting the old mounts out wasn't a bad job, I threaded a long steel bar between the fender and radiator, had my father hold it in place and drove the mount out with a sledge hammer. Only took a few light blows. If I wanted to put them back in that would have been another story....


I won't try to sway you to put in FAMs but I will say they were a breeze to install and will make any future engine removal/installation a lot easier.

As a16 year old 50years ago I changed the rear motor mounts out by my self before forums. Used a bottle jack with a 2x under the transmission, came out easily, going back in was harder. I did the passenger side first and foght the drivers side. With one new in placed I removed it then did the other side, then back to the first side. I don't remember removing anything else, removing the floor boards and muffler would have helped, I was young and full the vinegar !

I’m thinking of tackling this without removing the floorboards, as I just put extra screws in them to eliminate rattles. Of course, I’ll take them out if necessary. I’ve had this car for 53 years, and one rear motor mount has been missing one of the ears that fasten to the bell housing all that time. It’s never been a problem, but in the current times, I’ve been taking care of things on this car that have needed attention for a long time. I’ll keep you all posted.

You’ll need easier access to the bolts, so it’s worth removing floorboards. I also had to unbolt the cowl from the frame so the spreader could move the frame.
