Grease
 

I have a 29 chassis that I want to grease the front end. The grease zerts are not, as some of you know like the modern ones. Do I use a regular grease gun or is there a fitting I need to get?

I replaced all nipples with modern so called "hydraulic nipples". (They have the same thread.) They can be lubricated with any modern grease gun.

You can buy the adaptor for your gun at one of the model A ford parts houses cheaper than replacing all your fittings.

You can either use the original grease gun or get a fitting from most of the Model A parts vendors to use on a modern grease gun.

If you like things restored and historical rather than modified there is no need or real advantage to changing to the locking Alemite or Zerk fittings. Henry positioned them so they were all a fairly straight shot with the original pump gun. The need to 'lock on' to a fitting that you can barely reach is not an issue on an A.

If you go the modified route rather than restoration and start replacing original stuff with later parts, some of the fittings are threaded and some are a slightly tapered press fit. You can get a kit with all the necessary modern fittings from most of the vendors.

The advantage I see with the more modern fittings is they have a ball check valve to help keep moisture and dirt out of the fitting. While the older fitting does have a ball check valve, it is recessed in the fitting, allowing dirt to clog it.

Also I like to use the little plastic covers over the fitting. These will not work with the older ones.

Well I also own a modern car, I don't think it has any grease fittings!

Haha, That's because moderns, like most things these days, are considered "disposable". :rolleyes: :rolleyes: Part goes bad, R&R it.

Does original style grease gun work any better on original fittings than modern one with adapter? Modern one seems a little awkward sometimes trying to get straight on.
