54 Mercury Fuel pump question
 

Removed the old fuel pump today. Pretty obvious it was bad after I got it off.
Took awhile to get the new correct one back on.
There are two vacuum ports at the bottom of the pump, for what I gather is the wiper system. Can anyone advise how to block these ports off?? I have no plans on connecting to vacuum wipers at this time.

Can anyone advise what the old pump was really for?? Don't think it was for a 256 engine.

Looks like a standard replacement pump for a y-block.

Just put some plastic or rubber caps over the tubes. The old pump looks like a single action pump with no vacuum for the wipers. The other style with the two vacuum tubes is a dual action pump.

The car still has vacuum wipers on it? If so, you would want the vacuum pump to work if ever driven in the rain. If not, just block the ports off with vacuum caps to keep filth out of the vacuum pump as mentioned

I'm going off of memory here...maybe some of you can help. I recall that my '54 Ford V-8 (EBU) had a different fuel pump (with a different actuator rod/arm/whatever) than later Y-blocks. The later pumps wouldn't work on my car. I couldn't find a pump and the ones I tried were wrong. I finally sent mine in to be rebuilt at Now and Then (which was a good solution.)


Wouldn't that be the same situation with the early '54 Mercury V-8's? I still run into people who say "You're wrong...any Ford Y-block fuel pump will work on any other Ford Y-block" but as I recall it wasn't the case on mine.

54 has several differences Ford and Mercury.

You are correct. Lots of differences between the early 239/256's vs the later 239/256, 272, 292, 312 fuel pumps and oil tubes from the pan to the pump as you have seen here. It should be noted that the later 239/256's in 1955 were different from the 54's

There were two 239CI engines released.

The 239CI EBU DIF (BIG CAM) was used in 1954 PASS CAR.

The 239CI EBV CLV (SMALL CAM) was used in the LT SERIES.

The 256CI EBY CLV (SMALL CAM) was used in the 1954 MERC (also 1954 FORD POLICE).

The pumps are unique to the 1954 model run only. 1955 saw a change in design.

The 1954 FORD had both a SGL STAGE and a DBL STAGE pump available, where as the MERC was cataloged with only a TWO-STAGE PUMP.

His photo is DBL. The one I showed is SGL.

I took off the pump show in the left photo-a single stage pump. I just installed a brand new two stage-DBL pump-the photo on the right.

The LINC still has vacuum operated wipers?

The Mercury does have vacuum wipers, but getting its source from ANOTHER location. On my list of things to check as time goes on.

The vacuum wiper motor operates off manifold vacuum. When manifold vacuum drops past a certain point (as in acceleration or climbing a grade), the fuel pump mounted vacuum pump cuts in supplying a vacuum source until manifold vacuum stabilizes.

Depending on model and also offered as an option, many cars only used the SGL STAGE PUMP (fuel supply only). One can install an electric vacuum pump to overcome the limitations of vacuum supply, or an electric changeover.
