Here's a picture of some round-back spindles I had where you can see they are 1/4-28.

Re: Grease fitting size for 1937 ford spindles Kurt is correct, they are pipe threads, not 1/4-28 keeping in mind that the fitting has seal against leakage. They are so close to one another that it is easy to mistake one for the other.

Re: Grease fitting size for 1937 ford spindles they are Ford #353043-S7 which is 1/4-28 1/2" tall according to the Green Book, but in the 1928-38 catalog it lists 1/8" npt for 37-38 and 1/4-28 for 34-36
As David Says, they are close as 1/8" NPT is 1/4-27 so you can actually managae to install the wrong one and it'll still somewhat work |

1/8 pipe and 3/8-24 are the one that are close. I just finished putting kingpins in a pair of 37 spindles and they are 1/4-28. I have 3 more sets and they are 1/4-28. Compare a 1/8 pipe fitting and a 1/4 bolt to see the difference. Bill |

Re: Grease fitting size for 1937 ford spindles I know my 32 spindles are 1/8 pipe but my 39s are 1/4-28. So at some point in between Ford made the change.

35 Fords have 1/4 28 NF grease nipples, so change must have occurred then |
Re: Grease fitting size for 1937 ford spindles As far a a grease fitting sealing because of a taper, the 1/4-28 fitting are tapered, even though the threaded hole is not. If you look close at a 14/-28 grease fitting you can see the slight taper. They are supposed to tighten at the last thread and seal, at least seal enough so that grease doesn't squirt out.
The 1/8 pipe ones are also tapered, just like a pipe fitting would be. As others have said 1/8 pipe is much bigger than 1/4 inch. |
Re: Grease fitting size for 1937 ford spindles My bad, I guess I was thinking of the '32-'34 fittings which are 1/8" pipe threads.

Re: Grease fitting size for 1937 ford spindles Oh lord, it sounds like I need to buy both!!! I should have pulled them out before I had the axle cleaned up and painted. As always thanks, this site is awesome!!

Re: Grease fitting size for 1937 ford spindles I looked thru all my individual chassis parts catalogues to clarify the issue. They didn't. The 1/8" pipe grease fitting is listed as 353027-S7 and then its called 353047-AS7 and eventually 353043-S7. But it is eventually listed as being used for 33-34, 37, 38-48.
The 353034-S7 1/4" x 28 grease fitting seems to have been used on some 34 spindles and on all 35-36 spindles. God Bless Henry and his Merry Men!!! |
Re: Grease fitting size for 1937 ford spindles I have found nothing but 1/8" NPT on each and every 39-40 spindle I have ever worked with.
