Drum brakes 1953 Mercury M250 Classic
 

Hi folks, I am looking to install new brakes (stay with the original drums) on my 1953 Mercury M250. Until now I have been getting most of my parts shipped from the US as I live in Canada and my options are limited. I was thinking that drum brake kits should be available at NAPA or another parts store. Has anyone purchased these lately or know of part numbers I could use? Also looking for rear shock mounting studs.

Not sure about NAPA, but i got shoes for my 52 Victoria from a local family owned parts store in Ohio. Give your NAPA a call, i'll bet they can get them.

Am I correct in assuming that an M250 is the same 3/4 ton truck as an F-250 stateside and that the brakes are 12"x2" and look like this:

The M250 is the Mercury version of the F250 in Canada.

The old F2 /F3 and F250/F350 were still using the Timken Detroit rear axle if I remember correctly. Brake parts for these vehicles are getting more scarce as the years go by. I don't think drums are available at all so folks have to convert for later model brake parts once the drums are gone.

I'm not sure if or when Ford of Canada started using the Timken A150 rear axle. It's about the same as the older 51524 used on the F2s but had an updated pinion. The brakes were probably the same. If a person can find a 1967 thru 1971 F250 in the salvage yard with a good Dana 60 rear in it then that is a bolt in replacement and would have later brakes on it.

I may be wrong about the drum situation. Chuck's trucks sells the drums that work with the later shoes for the early 100 series 3/4 tons. I'm not sure if this requires mods or not but Chuck's could fill a person in on that.
