40 pick up steering column bushing
 

Hello Barners
I want to install a bearing race at the top of my steering column on my 40 ford pickup truck instead of the stock bushings. I have stock steering and the bearing will ease my turning of the wheel. I did this previously on my 34 ford SD.
I will need the ID and the OD of the stock bushing please and thanks in advance.

There is a guy making a bushing for that very purpose. His name is Brucegard, or something close to that. I have one on my 35 PU and it works great. Someone on here will post his name and contact info. I'm 89 and can't remember where I put that info. LOL At least I can remember there is such an animal available. LOL

Lawson is right and I have usedat least 3 -maybe 4 . Well worth the money! Had it in my 32 for 15000 + miles and also in 2 different 35s . Will look and see if I can find the info. kerk

I remember like 20 yrs ago, there were more ways to do it with a stock bearing. A wheel barrel wheel bearing ( don't laugh). About $10.

Thanks barners one and all I was able to source one that fits great with a ridge that I bought on the prime for $10 shipped for free.

yep again, wheel barrow bearing. you can get the two dollar chinese thing at a hardware store, or auto parts stores usually have a listing for a higher quality sealed unit for about 10 bucks

You might find that a 3/4" wheel barrow bearing needs opening up to fit the larger Ford steering shaft. At times the flange limits how deep it fits in the tube; needs to go in deep enough to clear the wheel.

Another alternative is a F-100 pick-up ball bearing and spring along with a Mustang tapered giz. The bearing is tapped into the column tube, cone installed and then the wheel push it down thru the spring. Just have to figure out the depth of the bearing.

Wheel barrel bearings . Or you can upgrade to sealed bearings but the wheel bearing is easily lubed and will outlast us .

The one on Ebay is the brusegard one which is perfect. Some people have a problem with perfect.

Fairly good writeup on his ebay page. I could do without the scare tactics though. A stock bushing is not dangerous, LOL.

... rubber construction causes extreme friction and when combined with a rotating steering shaft, the resulting hard steering is dangerous. Without continuous lubrication, the rubber bushing will ultimately stick to the steering shaft and both will rotate or lock up within the steering column and could potentially cause an accident.

The highlights are in the original! Appears to be a nice product, but he should knock off the nonsense.
