John Deere Lubes... Got to travel out to what's left of rural New Jersey today and stopped at a John Deere dealer to pick up some Corn Head grease and Slip Plate. They told me that they're not carrying the Slip Plate any more (at least at this dealer) 'cause it doesn't do what someone thinks it should. Is this a local phenomena? Also, is the Corn Head grease good to use in a steering box as well as the universal? Thanks!

Re: John Deere Lubes... Hi Pete. I think most farm stores would have slip plate(graphite paint)available. I own an independent farm supply store here in the midwest and have it in gal., Qts. and aerosol cans. It's a good product. I have not used cornhead grease in a steering box but don't see why it wouldn't work. Just MHO.

Re: John Deere Lubes... Don't know the stuff, but if it is really grease it is not good for a gear type steering box unless it is actually runny. It will wipe away from the action and leave a cavity unless it is liquid...you can only use grease in ball type steerings that continually drag it back into place. Box needs 140 or similar.

Re: John Deere Lubes... The container on the cornhead grease says gear boxes and nlgi grade no. 0 . Will not drain from gears during idle periods.

Re: John Deere Lubes... Thanks all! I got the corn head grease OK. I was planning to use the Slip Plate in some leaf springs, but I do have a roll of liner and I'll just use that unless I can find the Slip Plate "locally" sooner.

Re: John Deere Lubes... I need to follow up on the online cornhead grease! seems there are no cornheads around here, local dealer said they can get it but I have to buy the whole case. :(

Re: John Deere Lubes... While out at Hershey this week, I asked a local if there was a John Deere dealer nearby. He gave me directions and I found it before leaving for home. I asked for "Slip Plate," which they didn't have but they did have (and I bought) "Superlube Synthetic Dri-Film Lubricant." Is this the stuff or is it a totally different animal? It's supposed to have Teflon in it.

Re: John Deere Lubes... I just filled my steering box with Penrite Steering Box Lube. It's halfway between a grease and an oil, and is quite sticky. It looked so good I'm going to put it in my universal too. From what I've read online, it might be a similar consistency to cornhead grease.

Re: John Deere Lubes... John Deere's web-site has a video of the corn head greas in action. Those that are curious will be surprized at how fluid this stuff gets when in motion but how solid it quickly becomes when at rest again. It's some pretty amazing stuff.
Dow makes Molykote (molybdenum disulfide & graphite) in paste (#1000), brush(#106), and spray (#321) forms but I haven't had to get any for a while so am unsure about availability. I have to buy it by the case so it lasts for quite a while. Kerby |

Re: John Deere Lubes... Easy to find STP does a great job in my 35 ford steering box. It steered like a log wagon until I replaced the 140 lube with STP.
