41 fuel tank replacement (Tanks) Anyone swapped out the original 41 ford fuel tank and purchased one of their (Tanks) sending units as well.
They don't make a stock replacement with the fuel line located bottom back drivers side the fuel pickup is off the top of the tank. Good experiences or bad are appreciated. |
Re: 41 fuel tank replacement (Tanks) Check around as I'm sure somebody makes a new tank with the correct fuel pickup location. Some time back I put a new tank in a '46 ford and it had the correct location. As I recall I think it was a Drake tank. I was also able to use the stock sender. The 46 tank is the same as the 41 if you are putting it in a passenger car.

Re: 41 fuel tank replacement (Tanks) Also, make sure the replacement tank will have the 6 screw holes required for installing your stock gas tank sending unit if you plan to use it. The TANKS sending unit will not work with your original fuel gauge.

Re: 41 fuel tank replacement (Tanks) I installed a Tanks fuel tank in our '41. true that the fuel line is on top as I believe that is required by law. I used an after market sender as we changed to 12V. Was tricky installing into the frame. had to get the tank in place on top of frame in front, hold it there with a jack, install the rear 2 mounts to the tank and then bolt the mounts to the frame. was suppose to be threaded insert in the tank for the front bolt but there wasn't. will have 6 bolt sender but I believe you can find or make an adapter for 5 bolt. was a tinkery job. also for some reason they put the sender to the left of the door in the floor. I enlarged the opening and fab'd a larger door to access the sender.

Re: 41 fuel tank replacement (Tanks) I just replaced my 41 tudor gas tank with one from Dennis Carpenter . Exact as original except for the sender . It takes an adapter to use the sender . Its got the sender on top in original location and all mounting holes lined up .
Id buy one again if needed . |
Re: 41 fuel tank replacement (Tanks) This is exactly the kind of feedback I was hoping for. I had not thought about the safety side of things with the pickup tube coming out for the top and maybe I'll pull the tank see if I can get the one snapped off sending unit screw out and reuse the tank. Again thks again to all

Re: 41 fuel tank replacement (Tanks) Veeder, You can use a small tap drill to redrill the broken off screw and then rethread it. I believe its a 10-32 thread. Check to make sure. It would be easy to do with the tank out of the car.
Another easier solution would be to drill and tap the tank and sending unit for a new screw in a new location next to the old one. The easiest solution would be to leave the broken off screw in place and just keep using the remaining 5 screws. It really isn't necessary to have all 6 sending unit screws installed in order to have the sending unit held in place and not leak. You can also make your own gasket. My advice is to reuse the OEM tank if at all possible. Just make sure the inside is nice and clean and you use a fuel filter. |
