Remember if you run a 600-16 on your spare you will have to let some air out to get it into a wheel well. Carry a tire pump and everything is good. This is true on the '30-'31 and I assume the same on the earlier cars. Running a smaller tire for the spare might work but I haven't tried it.

Yup,I sure do...my lord what will become of me when my 50 buck tires wear out over 20,000 miles..I have to sell my model a for "conduct unbecoming a cheapskate'

Anyone ever use a temporary spare tire on a 1935 16" wheel in a fenderwell? I see they make 145/90-16 and 155/90-16 sizes. Put a cover on it and the wheels match what is on the road.

For my '29 Tudor I want to use a set of 1935 16" wheel and the wheel diameter is 4", as everyone knows. In shopping for radial tires for my 16" wheels, Coker has some nice Excelsior Stahl Sport Radial 650R16's for $329, specified for wheel width 4:00" - 6:00" and 28.8" overall diameter, which is similar i overall diameter to my car's stock 21" tires. Looking at regular commercially available tires I cannot find any tire with a specification for a similar overall diameter specified for a 4" wheel width -- instead, most specifications are for a 5" - 6" wheel width, but at least 5.5" wheel width if I go up to 215/85/R16 which is required to get a similar overall tire diameter to my stock tires. For example, there's a Firestone "Transforce CV" 195/75R16 with overall diameter of 27.5" for $136 from Tire Rack but the wheel width is specified as 5:00" - 6:00". My question is: does the Forum think it would be O.K. to use a modern tire spec'd for a minimum 5:00" or 5:50" wheel width on a 1935 16" wheel which is only 4:00" wide? It appears that is what many on this Forum have done and they are all still alive and well. Just checking. Just to reiterate, the Coker Stahl Sport is spec'd for 4:00" - 6:00" which suggests that a tire spec'd for 5:00" - 6:00" should be O.K. on a 4:00" wide wheel.

Paul, I ended up buying USA made Douglas P215/70-16 and P225/70-16 from Walmart. Maybe a little wide for the wheels and 75 aspect ratio would have been better, but it looks and drives fine and the price was right.

I wonder myself. I would probably never notice the difference in the 5/8" taller tire.

Thanks. That's what I was looking for, i.e., confirmation that a tire spec'd for 5" - 6" wide wheels would work O.K. on a 1935 Ford wheel which is only 4" wide. I don't want the tires popping off on me. Thanks, again.

This is what Carroll Shelby (yes,that one) did to fit a side mount in his sport coupe.As long as the 19 is close in diameter..but even if it isnt,its a spare,it'll get you to a shop.

Paul,I run 205/55's on my coupe with 35 wires,no problem.Some wives tales floating around about sidewall flex and the ford wheel flange but that don't hold water

X2 - Black blends in more than mine and is not as noticeable. Missing spare hubcap.

I know it is overkill for a 50-60 mph car, but since a buddy of mine has all of the equipment, I went ahead and Road Force Balanced my 16" Douglas tires and wheels. Glad I had extra wheels since one was a little out of spec for true. Smooth as can be, and these tires are not bad about following the road grooves that the local Log and Chip 18-wheelers make. Also found some 155/90-16 temporary spare tires that should fit inside the fender wheel wells and hopefully the tire covers will work too.

I like the stock look of the original tires, 19 or 21. It is just my preference. I had 16 inch tires on a car in the 60's and didn't like them. Looks and harder to steer with the stock steering box. Switched back to the 19 inch wheels and tires.

Right now I really like the looks of these 16" tires/wheels on my 30 Huckster but I am definitely keeping the 19" tires and wheels in case I want to change back.



I did try the 16" wheels/tires on my 29 Tudor but didn't like the look at all!

In my opinion, sixteen inch wheels ruin the original look of the model A .

I had my rear rims widened 1.5" so the 750x16 would fit better.

I personally prefer the look of the original 19" or 21" wheels on a Model A. For those who may be considering changing from the original size to one of the later V8 wheels for performance reasons, I might suggest that they also consider the new radial tires from Coker as a possible alternative. I've heard that they drive much better than other "not-radial" tires, and by doing so would also avoid speedometer accuracy issues. Just my thoughts, FWIW.

tuneman: I purchased an after-market TPMS that plugs into a cigarette lighter. I chose one that a knew worked on 6 volts. Because I am using 35 Ford 16 inch wire wheels, the included valve stems are too small in diameter to fix the 16" wheels. I had to modify the larger metal valve stems to take the mounting ball from the TPMS valve stems. The pressure is sensed with a wireless connection between the tire sensor and the receiver. The TPMS system I purchased also tells me the generator output voltage.

Chris Haynes had his 16 inch wheels widened 1.5 inches. Does anyone know how this is done and can they recommend anyone to do it? I am in Tennessee.
