337 Lincoln powered hot rods.
 

Guys I'm curious if any of you have had first hand experience or at least know of 337 Lincoln engine powered rods or race cars?

I have seen a few Caddy powered rods here and there but the 337 stuff is really rare. I'm pretty sure Ken Austin had a 337 in a '39 Ford years ago. I remember seeing a video of a Model A coupe in England which was sporting the big motor.

The question is, is there much more out there? Has anyone gotten them to work in a lightweight car like say a '32 Roadster? I know there was a little action with them for la Carrera Panamericana and the early Muniz Jets etc. What kind of attention did the hot rodders pay to the 337's if any?

Conceding that they are pretty heavy there are some things that look good on paper with this big block Flathead. The porting looks more advanced to me and of course the larger displacement.

So if you're bored and got nothing else to do on this autumn Sunday I'd like to know more. Stories and pictures would be great if you have them. Thanks!

Don't believe the flat heads were used in either case, but the 317c.i. OHV Lincolns were.
The early 'hot rodders' used them because that's all they had or they didn't know any better.

I think I saw one Friday in the Pismo Beach North campground but can't be sure since it had a low hood. I do know it had aluminum heads, Edmunds if I remember correctly. It was a pretty sanitary car. Don't know if it got in any runs on Saturday or not.

Was a 337 powered Model A coupe the basis for the original Hot Rod Lincoln song? It may have been a coupe body on the Lincoln chassis.

The Hot Rod Lincoln was built on a cut down 46 to 48 chassis with the V 12 engine. A model A coupe body was mounted to the chassis with the hood extended to accommodate the V 12. I believe it still exists.

In back I love the low down exhaust rumble of the stock 337 in my avatar after passing through 2 large oval mufflers. In front the motor is whisper quite like a Lincoln should be.

I don't know if this qualifies or not, but when I was in high school, a couple of guys I knew put a 337 Lincoln in a '53 Ford. They got it in, but couldn't get it to run. I got it going for them, but they never got it on the road. The engine was so heavy that the front suspension was constantly bottomed out, and they had modified the steering for clearance, and the car was virtually uncontrollable. These guys were a couple of "Bubba's", so their failure was more of a reflection on them rather than what they were trying to do.

That is a unique Lincoln you have there. Looks like a custom built "ute". The Lincolns with the big flathead must have had some heavy front springs.

I really would love to get ahold of one of these 337's someday. I'm having a hard time with the concept of 850 lbs though. These things are big but they're not THAT big. Maybe that number includes the transmission that was bolted to the back of them?

I saw that car as well. Not being familiar with that engine, it took awhile to figure out what that was.

I did a customer chassis with one several years ago. 32 Ford 3 window. Had to have Posie make me a special spring to hold it up.
