Shift knob removal tricks.

I am trying, without any luck, to remove the original shift knob on a 32 stick to use it on a 40`s style stick without destroying either.

Use a strap wrench.

Or a pipe wrench with a strip of rubber to protect the knob. The threads are the normal right hand variety.

Klein makes a small strap wrench of some sort of fabric covered with soft, almost sticky rubber-like stuff. VERY grippy and kind to surfaces.

I've unthreaded some stubborn knobs by wrapping with course grit emery cloth and then using a small pipe wrench to unthread the knob after soaking with Kroil penetrant for a few days. Usually works for me. Paul J.

....just don't let the emery cloth slip.

Thanks for all the tips. I have been soaking it in Kroil as well and will try a pipe wrench with some rubber or suitable material.

Glad to hear you got that shift knob off. Maybe someone had used Loctite on those threads in the past to keep it tight. It seems like the shift knobs on my cars are constantly coming loose :).

I ended up using epoxy to keep mine tight, pity the guy that needs to take it off in the future, hopefully it's not me.
