Oil pan baffle When I had the pan off my engine recently to change the gaskets I noticed that there were small holes in the baffle that had been soldered. Are those holes supposed to be there to allow oil to drain back into the pan? While reading another thread I saw that someone had mentioned holes.
Thanks for any help Ray |
Re: Oil pan baffle Are the holes in the wells or on the flat portion?

Re: Oil pan baffle The holes were in the wells.

Re: Oil pan baffle They should not be there - The wells are for the dippers for splash lubrication of the lower end.

Re: Oil pan baffle Thank you for the quick reply. The holes were 1/8" drilled holes that had been soldered over so I wasn't sure which was correct, there or not.

Re: Oil pan baffle If it was me I'd get a good pan without holes.. I would always be wondering if one opened up or leaked down..

Re: Oil pan baffle That pan may have been used in a full-pressure engine, to allow the oil to drain into the pan. If using a stock dipper system they must be plugged or the rods will starve for oil. Nothing wrong using it in a stock system as long as the holes are thoroughly plugged. If you are worried about it, get a different dipper-tray.

Re: Oil pan baffle I was mainly worried that the oil was supposed to be able to drain and there would be issues if it didn't. The baffle is very sturdy other than the drilled holes that were soldered closed.

Re: Oil pan baffle Sometimes acids in the oil eat holes in the wells... if this is the case, the bottoms of the baffles are usually eaten-at too...
As stated above, if you have a babbit / splash motor, no holes. If your tray is otherwise good, you could have those holes brazed or tigged closed. |
