Ma. inspection regulations for cars in storage

Seems to me I read somewhere that if the month anniversary of inspection came up in the winter while the car was in storage you wouldn't be required to get the car out for inspection until it as out of storage in the Spring, anything to this? Thanks, Barry B./ Ma.

Give'm a call. Might be different in another state but here in NY State I don't worry about the expiration month stated on the sticker and just get the inspection done as soon as I get car out of storage. I make an appointment to play it safe and if stopped on the way (never have) I would tell the Officer my situation and that I'm on the way to get it done (they can call and check if they want). I find the authorities here very very friendly towards old car enthusiast's because we generally take good care of our vehicles. I always get waved-thru when going thru a police check point.

Some state do not have these yearly inspection requirements, so it is most likely a MA specific requirement.

What are these "police check points" all about?

Teacher John, we have "police check points" on Long Island also. What it amounts to is, as your driving along there are police cars on each side of the road, with officers standing in the roadway. As you approach the officer, he checks the registration and inspection posted on the drivers side windshield. If your up to date, they wave you thru, if you are expired you get a summons. Any outstanding warrants, you go to jail.

We should set those up in Texas to check residency status.

I just let it them expire in the winter while in storage. When it is time to take them out in the spring, I just drive it up the street and get it inspected. Have been doing it like this for years with no problem. It was suggested to make an appointment. Try that it might work. They don't usually hassle old car people that are not screwing around and doing stupid stuff.

Well with my luck, I'd get "Dirty Harry" or some rookie officer, that wants to make a name for himself and wind up with a $100 citation.

In N.H. if your vehicle was built before 1949, it is no longer necessary to have it inspected unless the law has just been changed and I don't think it has.

In NJ there is no inspection for antiques (QQ plates) plus no registration fee.

We have to keep our insurance ll year around. If you take it off for the off season you have to surrender your registration and plates.

There is legislation now that would only require cars over 75 years old to be inspected only upon purchase then thay are good for life.

Re: Ma. inspection regulations for cars in storage

IN Pa you have 3months prior to inspection date to get it done. If expired you can drive to station, if stopped you get a post card that the inspector signs and sends into state.

Re: Ma. inspection regulations for cars in storage

Richard, how right you are. That's why the population of New York is shrinking. Every time you turn around there is some sort of tax increase or surcharge. People have had it and those that can, are leaving.

Re: Ma. inspection regulations for cars in storage

Not sure about your state but here in NY, the inspection are annual, so if it occurs in the winter storage months just have it done in the spring, from then on it will expire in the Spring. Mine runs out in Sept. so it's newly inspected for storage.

Re: Ma. inspection regulations for cars in storage

California had mandatory state safety inspections, which were regulated by the police departments with random inspections on the street.
I thought the inspections were a good idea, the motorist had to show proof of insurance, smog if so required and brake/light, etc.
The bleeding hearts decided the inspections violated the minorities civil rights so the law was stopped in the late '70's..

California now only has annual safety inspections on commercial vehicles over 10,k GVW.
