35 Colonial cab pickup Guys checkout the colonial cab 35 pickup for sale in New Zealand on Trademe.com . It belongs to one of my best friends , I cant believe he is selling her. A very unusual pickup , but were common in New Zealand at 1 time as were 36 Colonial cab pickups. Both now very hard to find. Somewhere I have pics of me with her.

Re: 35 Colonial cab pickup Back in the mid nineties there was an identical one (as far as my memory remembers) in a garage just around the corner from us. It was a sandy colour, unrestored, and I think the owner was trying to obtain a well known coupe body from up in someones rafters to replace the cab with. Not sure whatever happened to it though.
Would be interesting to know how many they built. |

Re: 35 Colonial cab pickup That is the nicest Colonial body I have ever seen, some of them were/are very, very ugly. This one has a lot more style (curves) than most.

Re: 35 Colonial cab pickup Think Ive seen this one, green colour ; Sth Islnd? Looks good. Just to be picky, no real evidence that Colonial Motor Co. did these new on passenger chassis. This was just before set up of Ford NZ [ 1936] & Colonial were just importers & distributor For Ford Canada. They were selling the standard type US/ Canadian steel cab & deck then which is the type mostly seen. They did make cabs & decks for the heavy commercial chassis however. But it could have been done by an independant workshop, most likely after the War when older cars were reused because all vehicles were expensive & hard to get here. Whatever, a nice pickup.

Re: 35 Colonial cab pickup The cab is all most Identical to the one on a Federal truck my Dad had back in the late 50's

Re: 35 Colonial cab pickup Re TudorTom "[They were selling the standard type US/ Canadian steel cab & deck then which is the type mostly seen]", I don't recall ever having seen a NZ new 35 pickup with Canadian steel cab and deck but the 35 pickups that I have seen were all sporting coach-bulit cabs and decks. Some were unique, presumably by independent builders, who knows when, and others with cabs built to a pattern that I attributed to the Colonial Motor Co. Yes, the 1936 pickups and heavy trucks are often seen with steel cabs but the pickup steel decks were not Canadian, they were manufactured locally. These steel 36 trucks would have been assembled in the Ford plant at Seaview and there are photos that attest to this.
Colonial were certainly importing Canadian all steel pickups in 1934, but not in 1935, nor 1932 or 1933. About 25 years ago, Michael Gibbons, CEO Colonial Motor Company, showed me the 1935 production records for the Timaru assembly plant (one of only a few records to survive the head office fire). I was astounded by the number of convertibles. I gained the impression that they didn't sell well and many were simply converted to pickups. Some may remember that there was a 35 pickup with a roadster cowl and similar body to this one sitting in a paddock below Mt Cargill Rd Dunedin in the 70s. It probably rotted away. Anyway, very attractive pickup truck. John |
