King pins on 35 Putting ‘28-‘48 spindles on my ‘35 to accommodate Bendix backing plates. Car needs king pins so will change @ same time. Question should I get king pins for a ‘35 or the ‘48 or do they take the same ones? I think the latter?:o

Re: King pins on 35 Get the king pins for the spindles.

Re: King pins on 35 28-48?
You use the pins that go with your spindles. What spindles are you using? |
Re: King pins on 35 .
Anthony.....As the guys have said above, you always use K-pins designed for the year of spindle, because the different spindles use different LENGTH K-pins, as well as other features like the BRAKE cups on the top of '36 and EARLIER K-pins. ALL king pins are the SAME diameter, yet that diameter is very exacting. SOME cheap-ass reproduction K-pins are a couple (or MORE) of thousandths TOO small, and may not even have the proper hardness for the severe service. If it were me, I would not procure your K-pins from Speedway or Mac's (Ecklers), as their exacting quality control COULD be suspect. I would order your K-pins from Michael Driskell at 3rd Gen in McMinville, Tn., or Mac VanPelt.....two guys that KNOW their stuff as well as the quality of their parts, and who strive to "DO RIGHT" by their customers. Re: King pins on 35 1 Attachment(s)
The often mentioned quality of Speedway parts gets tiresome, and really, do we know where anyone sources the merchandise they sell?
I just miced three k/p sets, an old Lion set for 35-36, a brand new Moog 42-48 set that Ive had on the shelf for 50 years and a Speedway 37-41 set. While I cannot speak to the actual Rockwell hardness a rudimentary check by striking with a center punch shows them to be close. Yeah, I know its not very scientific but it did show that all three are hard. The Speedway set uses more current technology, it was induction hardened as seen by the dark ring in the photo. Here are the numbers, Lion- .8118/.8119, .8127/.8131, Moog- .8115/.8118, .8119/.8122 and Speedway- .8122/.8118 .8121/.8119. With the old reamers around that usually ream to .813 or so I think there is an endorsement to be made for honing at the machine shop for a perfect fit. |
Re: King pins on 35 Just don't use the ones with roller bearings. Put in new bearing and have the king pins reamed to fit.

I do believe they are. but some are keyed for the wheel lock out set pin. At least in 38. Anything below and after are above my paygrade. |
Re: King pins on 35 Sourcing king pins. Better safe than sorry, NOS, NORS or rely on 3rd gen or MAc as suggested.

Re: King pins on 35 Thx for all the good Info & tips! I’ll keep as reference material! Researched a bit more & discovered in fine print “Spindles require ‘37-‘41 king pins.

Re: King pins on 35 I forgot to list Fred at SSO. Glad Tim brought it up. Fred is the go to guy for lot of NOS & NORS parts. I got my '40 king pins from him. Kept the cool old box they came in "Haines King bolt Set".
