I know this is not the hot rod section. However I'm trying to find the back story on this 1951 extreme custom I just acquired. A guy in Kentucky named Bobby Simpson built it in the 1970's , a shop named Thompson's also in Kentucky worked on it. Any input on it's history would be welcomed. Frank

Sweet! Looks like it was customized in the 50’s, not 70’s :)

Perhaps you might get a bite over on the HAMB.
Is what appears to be a chopped top functional?

Very nice traditional 60's Custom. I wouldn't call it radical at all.

350 bow tie, would have preferred a hot flathead, however I still like the styling.

1951 Ford Convertible

Body: The body was repainted about five years ago and had a few minor modifications. The hood scoop is from a late model Mustang with working vent hole in hood to help with air flow.
Exterior body changes: 1955 Chevy bumpers front and rear. 1955 Chrysler grill bar. 1959 Pontiac side trim. Custom flared fender skirts. 1959 Cadillac tail lights. Body is sectioned. Windshield is chopped. Undercarriage has blue neon lights.
Interior body changes: 1953 Olds dash. 1955 Ford style seating. A/C Heat. AM/FM CD. Working top has interior headliner.
Drive train: Crate 350 Chevy Motor. 350 Auto transmission. Power steering. Power brakes with front disc and rear drum. Radial tires.
I don’t know old the car is but it was built in Tennessee by Bobby Simpson and has been in many magazines and has won many awards according to previous owners

The front bumper gives you a place to put your feet if you sit on the fender above the headlight

Some of he styling is 1950s with some 60s & 70s thrown in to boot. With custom cars, some things are liked by all and some things aren't but that's why they call them custom cars. They are built to the tastes of the builder.

That's a beauty. Lots of time, work and money to make a dream come true.
Hope the new owner has photos of the build and provenance to go with the car
Having a letter of verification from the original builder would be a bonus.

I have a picture I took of it in 1999 in Detroit at the Shoebox ford owners convention. I remember it being a very nice car.

Re: 1951 customzed convertible

The original owner , builder passed years ago his name was Bobby Simpson from Kentucky. The car has passed hands four times since his passing. It also got some upgrades along the way, IE hood scoop, chrome trim around the front, fresh paint. I'm seventy five years old going on seventy six, so I'm sure it will be passed on to a new owner in a few years, hopefully while I'm still alive! LOL

Good going Frank, that's a nice one and he didn't go overboard. My 51 sedan was at that convention in 1999, it had a new owner then but I since have it back.
