AA Transmission

Screwy question; has anybody tried to put an AA trans into a passenger car frame? Creeper gear in a sedan would probably be useless, but interesting.

Re: AA Transmission

It should be a great parade car! You can keep the RPM up a little to keep the battery charged after all the Ah-ooga's.

Re: AA Transmission

Its been done . Ford may have offered some that way . The four speed is heavy and can speed up sagging of the frame at the rear motor mounts . Reverse is just as creepy as first gear or double low .

Re: AA Transmission

Starting in mid 1931 you could get a 4 speed in the Model A from Ford.

Here are some pictures of the two transmissions and clutch housings side by side.

The 4-speed is considerably larger and heavier.

The u-joint is also different as the output shaft of the 4-speed is larger than the 3-speed. So you have one end with a large spline and the other end has the smaller A spline to mate with the drive shaft.

The last picture shows the different clutch housings.

1st gear is really low. Great for loading onto trailers and parades but for the most part I'd start out in 2nd for normal driving.

I replaced it with a 3-speed.

Re: AA Transmission

My june 31 PU has the 4 speed and when I got it I just thought that somebody had got one out of a junk yard and put it in, but then George DeAngelis showed me a photo of the assembly line with a pickup and on the firewall was chalked 4 speed.

Re: AA Transmission

I have one in my '30 pu. You need the AA bell housing, rear bearing retainer and u-joint.
My truck idles up my steep driveway. Was a bulletin in June 1930 I believe. Almost useless but fun!
