When reinstalling the oil pan how do you keep the oil pump up in position the engine is still in the car, or will it stay up on its own? Thank you

I make a loop around it so it can be undone from the outside and hang it off ether the manifolds or one of the studs. Then when some of the pan bolts are started I pull the wire out.

Snyders has a little screw in gadget. You unscrew the oil hole plug - 2 inches above the oil pan flange -screw this gadget in place and tighten against the oil pump housing. When pan is installed remove thegadget and replace the plug. Works lik a charm. kp

Remove slot screw plug and insert holder, remember to remove holder and insert plug when job is complete.

Do not use a bolt to hold the pump in place it is a tapered thread and a bolt will damage the thread in the block . Put a suitable cable tie through the adjacent pan bolt holes and run it around the back of the pump stalk and pull it tight .When you have a few loose bolts holding the pan in place snip the tie and pull it clear . Job done .

You can easily make the tool. Obtain another block plug, drill a hole though it and tap it for a 6-32 or 8-32 screw.

Easy to make,it is a pipe plug 1/4 in. I believe,drill and tap down the center of plug and insert a screw so you can tighten it against the oil pump.

If you use the special bolts/tools above from teh vendors, they are safe. They are a pipe thread bolt. And you are correct, a standard or metric bolt will either strip the threads and/or damage the Block.

I just bent up a piece of 1/4 in rod. I think an old piece of brake rod. Put a few bends in it so it pushes against the frame rail and the pump through the hole.
I have used the same rod several times.

I took a small spring, out of a pen I think, cut it so it is flush with the block with the pump installed and then screwed the plug in, holds the pump real nice and the spring comes out easy after the pan is installed, remove the spring, reinsert the plug and you're all done, no fuss, no muss and no special tool...cost is free.

I make a small paper shim and use it to wedge the pump when installing to the block. It won't go anywhere or harm the engine.

We've had crazy weather here too, all winter. The creek behind the house started running yesterday, it normally starts running in late March. Last year it started running on March 24th.
