Anyone have this kit and stock design 15" steel rims?

Looking at the inside surface of the Ford wheel where it bolts to the brake disc, at the level where the caliper sits, the wheel center angles OUTWARD and AWAY from the caliper. I believe the only possible interference (IF any) may be with the inside diameter of the outer hoop. Frankly, I don't see it hitting on a stock Ford wheel. Re: Wilwood front disc kit 140-14190 I've seen the diagram. I'm going to have to make a 13.58" circle out of cardboard and see where it hits...... it's that close. My educated guess is
that the outside caliper block won't clear in the "corner." |

You likely have your mind made-up, but the Bendix-type Lincoln reproductions by MT Car Products (Boling Bros.) are a direct BOLT-ON, they FIT, the wheels FIT, they STOP for sure, and you damned-sure don't need a power booster as is necessary with MOST disc applications. $400 and use your existing Ford drums with 1-3/4" shoes, or about $670 with new 2"-wide shoes and NEW DRUMS, or for about $1,070-ish, the complete package including new, properly-fitting hubs. These brakes will stop JUST AS WELL as that disc brake kit any day of the week. Re: Wilwood front disc kit 140-14190 The cheapest way to go is with the speedway kit, unfortunately ths system is heaver than the stock brake drum and will cause handling problems. However for a passenger car/truck, work very well.

I used Wheelsmith 15" rims and the Willwood D52 brake cylinders on my truck (they are on a IFS hub). I had to use wheels spacers and round over the top edges of the Willwood cylinder with a file or they would just scrape the inside of the wheel. (The D52's are kind of chunky). Of course your wheel setback will make a difference too. The Willwoods are not cheap and the MT Car Products Lincoln style brake kit may be a better solution. I installed their Lincoln style rear brakes last year and they seem very well made.

One more little piece of information that I have shared in the past....I just finished verifying with the Speedway Tech folks that the "SPEEDWAY" brand Bendix/Lincoln reproduction drums and backing plates ARE NOT manufactured by MT Car Products (Boling Brothers)! This reply below from Speedway's 'tech department' this morning: Brittany - "According to our techs they are similar in the manufacturing of the product but they are not made by MT car products, these are ours. They just happen to be very similar in appearance." They're cheaper for a reason...'cuz they aren't the same quality as MT Car Products parts! There are numerous reports for some years now relating to inferior fit and machining of the Speedway drums. Many complaints involving being machined out of round. The Speedway drum pictures definitely show a SIMILAR, but DIFFERENT drum. Note the Speedway drum does NOT have the embossed Max Diameter of 12.090" like the MT drums have. In fact, the Speedway drums max-out at 12.060. Like I said earlier, order your "real" MT Car Products brake parts from Krylon32 here on the 'Barn for the real deal...PLUS a decent discount! Re: Wilwood front disc kit 140-14190 Sadly, any rotor & caliper combo is going to be heavier than that F-1 front drum setup. Only an aluminum caliper might have a chance at not having a weight penalty. I’m not a big fan of sliding calipers and prefer fixed. Definitely will be scrutinizing the front setup currently on there- I have the automatic adjustment hardware installed but something isn’t quite right as it has been a pain in the neck for consistency as far as pulling.

Re: Wilwood front disc kit 140-14190 FYI: Last year when I replaced my rear brakes from BB's I was told by BB's that Speedway was using their backing plates but not the BB's drums.

Re: Wilwood front disc kit 140-14190 The brakes are now Off the chassis so I can weigh them. I had the speedway disk conversion on and noticed an increase in weight over the stock 48 brakes. Now The car is a 27T roadster built for antique racing with a 258 ci flathead and handling is key to getting around the track. The weight of the axles (un sprung weight) must be controlled by the shocks & Springs to keep the wheels on the track. I learned this ny loosing many races. The lighter the axle the easier to control . When I was at Penskies they had a special fixture where they could put the complete car in and run it to het the right spring shock combination for each track. The small cost of learning.
At my age, I ve learned by somany mistaked, i should be the smartest man on earth. however, I could be wrong?? |

Has this changed? Now a couple guys I have talked to were satisfied with Speedway's hubs and drums; but I have read of problems. If you do get some Speedway drums it does pay to check the thickness at several points around the perimeter to ensure the casting was properly centered when machined. Really waiting to hear if anyone has tried Speedway's Buick style drum. Speedway's & ECI disc kit that uses the F-150 rotor is heavy (and big); never thought of it on the last kit we put on; but it would have been interesting to weigh the stuff and compare to a set of Lockheeds and drums. |
