removing distrubutor shaft

Is there a way to remove the distributor shaft without messing up the timing? I am thinking of replacing my head gasket.

The distributor and shaft will only go in one way so yes you can remove it without messing up the timing.

Just don't move the crank shaft

It won't mess anything up to turn the crankshaft since as the post above say it only goes back where it belongs. Most other cars maybe so.

Loosening the distributor cam screw and moving the distributor cam will get the engine out of time

IMHO, if you are up to tackling replacing a head gasket, the least of your worries should be disturbing the timing. So many people fret over the timing for no good reason. Resetting the timing is so simple a job compared to removing and replacing the cylinder head. But, yes, so long as you do not loosen the cam in the distributor, you won't change the timing. As others have said, it goes back in only one way because of the offset slot in the shaft.

Yes, same cam and screw arrangement on top and same shafts down below. The '33 would have the Model-B distributor cam.

I believe that the model B distributor cam is the only one made today . The B distributor cam has a better profile and works good on the model A distributor
