Center bearing I built a 40 rear end for my 32. The torque tube was cut for the flange. I cut it again near the center bearig just to see it. It is different than ones offered by the parts venders. It appears to be a caged roller bearing and the replacements look like ball bearings. Anybody want it? I would send it for postage. I hate to see any of the old parts scraped if I can help it.
I have no way of checking it for wear. If anyone has the dia of the driveshaft, I would machine a part to check fit. |
Re: Center bearing Andy,
Check out VanPelts website, they have a pretty good pic of the torque tube. |
Re: Center bearing 3 Attachment(s)
Andy: The OEM 40 center bearing is a special caged roller bearing encased in rubber with a hole for greasing. Over time the rubber will desintigrate, turning to mush. The original 40 OEM center bearing looks like the last photo. The driveshaft is not a tight fit in the bearing and easily slides in and out. Posting a photo of what you have would be helpful. Thanks for making your part available.

Re: Center bearing I took some pictures but the server is giving me problems. I have to email the pics to myself and then transfer to photos. It is not sending the pics back.
It looks like the posted pic. The rubber is soft but I can't pull the bearing out. I doubt if it is usable but I have no experience with them. It is not mushy. |
Re: Center bearing Wish we had some photos.

Re: Center bearing 2 Attachment(s)
Thanks Coop.
I finally got it to work. For what it's worth, here they are. I cut some of the bearing off as I did not know how wide it was. |
Re: Center bearing [email protected] makes a replacement. G.M.

Re: Center bearing Usually the rubber that holds the bearing has turned to snot. i have a picture of a NOS bearing in the Std Coupe album and the KRW tool that installs it in my MISC photo album.

Re: Center bearing 1 Attachment(s)
Andy, That bearing rubber casing is too far gone. No longer usable.
Thanks for posting the pix. I keep thinking there must be a way to re-encase the metal part of the OEM bearing in a suitable material that will allow it to be reused. Perhaps the material that skate board wheels are made of or DELRIN. Here's a thread that provides center bearing dimensions. https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showt...r+bearing+size |
Re: Center bearing 19Fordy,
With some work making the drawing, maybe it could be made with 3D printing. Just a thought. And thanks for your kind words Dick! |
Re: Center bearing Here's instructions on replacing the rubber if anyone is up for the challenge.

Re: Center bearing More confusion from me.
Since the consensus was that it was toast, I desided to investigate further. I cut the tube a couple of inches further away and tried to remove the bearing/rubber. Found an appropriate driver and wacked the bearing with my 8 lb sledge. I did seperate the inner tube from the torque tube. Nothing would dislodge the rubber from the inner tube or the bearing from the rubber. I had at it for quite a while. I finally dented the bearing cage and thru the mess away. I am glad 32's don't use center brngs. I failed. |
Re: Center bearing Andy, Thanks for perservering and sharing your center bearing ex[perience with us. Jim

Re: Center bearing Will D. Thanks for posting that info. on how Mike repaired his center bearing. I wish I had seen it before I paid huge $$$ for a new OEM bearing in 2017. I still have the saved metal bearing. JIM
