What year is my Model A.?
 

I'm sure that this has been talked about before. But I'm new to this site. What I think that I have is a 1930 Ford Model A with a body by Murray.There is no engine or transmission. The number on the frame is 3879634 with a star after the number . Is there anybody that can tell me what year my frame is.? Thanks for any help with this.

August 1930, matches up to that Serial Number.

The engine that was in your car originally was made on August 28, 1930. The number was stamped on the engine after it was run in. The engine was shipped from Dearborn to the various assembly plants. The engine number was stamped on to the frame when it was installed in the frame at the assembly plant. There for your Model A could have been assembled any where up to 3 months after the date the engine was made.

So, your Model A could have been assembled anywhere between September and November of 1930.

Hi All, I figured it was easiest to piggyback on this thread as I have a similar question.



I just raised the chassis (ugh!) to uncover the frame # on what I believe is a 1930 standard Coupe. Most of the number was legible. It appears to be either 9505654* or 3505654* or S5050654* (I think it's a 9, or maybe could be an "S"? Only top half of the digit is legible - also, it looks as if there is room for another digit between the "9" and the "5". The "6" is clear and is in the old "pre-Feb '31" font. Does anyone know if a 9 or 3 or an S is more likely to start a 1930 frame number? Or are all possible.



The engine # does not match: A4375881* with the "I" style 1 (so I think that means post-Feb '31 if I got my internet research correct.) Car is likely an east coast car originally. Maybe PA or that area. Thanks in advance for any help or pointing in good directions to check.

No! Only slightly less than 5,000,000 model A's built... so the numbers do not exceed that.

Thanks. I had some how missed the part in my reading that the exact engine number was stamped on the frame, so this all now makes sense. Got to head back out to the CHP and get the 9 changed to a 3. Wish I'd read better before I dragged it over the first time - although I have to say this particular VIN officer is one of the nicest guys I've interacted with in any official capacity, so I don't mind. He's the one that found the number in the first place - better eyesight than mine! lol.



Anyway, cutting a carriage bolt, rolling the welting, pulling the fender and splash plate (and light bar...) just to get at the frame number was a bit more work than I was counting on, but at least I got a number, (and birthdate) which is cool. Now if I can remember where all the shims went! lol...

Thanks for all of the reply's to my question. I got a State Trooper to come look at my car just to make sure it was not stolen, thankfully it came back o.k.. He asked me what color did I think it was I said well there's still some factory paint on it that looks kinda gray to me. And he says that there's more Rust color than gray and I tell him isn't Rust brown and he says I'm gonna go with Rust. The official paper that I had to send in to the DMV it says that the "color" is Rust. Thankfully it's just surface rust' But for being 90 years old the body is in Really good shape two small spots of rust thru at the bottom of the cowl and that's it. The Officer thought it must have been stored inside to be in that good of shape. Who know's.?
