Speedometer cable/speedometer noise Working on a '36 Ford Tudor that has been in my wife's family since new. Noise from in back of the instrument panel and wild mph readings. Believe it is a speedometer cable (it stopped when I unscrewed it from the speedometer). Any recommendations for a good person in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area to work through and solve this issue? Thanks in advance.

Re: Speedometer cable/speedometer noise When I had that problem with my '34 10 years ago I undid the cable as you have done and put a few drops of 3 in 1 oil in. It solved my problem.

I had an excellent experience with Rusty at Speedometer Service in Colorado Springs. I spoke with him several times on the phone. He sold me a NOS unit with lens for my '54 Ranch Wagon. He checked it all out before shipping it since it had been sitting on the shelf for a while. Fair price, reasonable shipping AND he shipped it to me before I sent him a check. https://www.speedoservice.com/ (719) 632-3165 |
Re: Speedometer cable/speedometer noise I did the same as Tom worked for me. Jack

Re: Speedometer cable/speedometer noise First try supporting the cable with a wire tie so that if feeds 90 degrees into the speedo head with a gentle curve instead of dropping down under its own weight.

Re: Speedometer cable/speedometer noise Like tomkc1 said the most important part is making sure that the cable is clean and lubed take and pull the cable out clean it and lube it with a very thin lubricant try this first good luck

Re: Speedometer cable/speedometer noise What Joe50 says . Remove , just pull the cable center out , lube , i use white lithium ( live in s Florida) reinstall . Itll usually go away . Also hang it like 19forty says , you want a straight shot as possible for the cable to enter the rear of the speedo

Re: Speedometer cable/speedometer noise My thanks to each of you for your suggestions. I'll give it a try and then call in the cavalry.

Re: Speedometer cable/speedometer noise I talked with Rusty in Colorado Springs, but he did not have the parts for the Delco unit that we have; however, he directed me to John at DeLuxe Speedometer and Cable Service in Denver. I've contacted him and he can help in the rebuild (which I've determined that I need through 3rd party testing) of the speedo. I'll report back on the outcome.

Re: Speedometer cable/speedometer noise Hi the speedometer needs a good cleaning and serviced. When it get dry in side it will make that noise and then when it get to bad it will lock up and damage the cable. If you need to have it done let me know. papanick [email protected]
