59L startup oil pressure at crank speed.

Followed the suggestion of one of the Fordbarner, pouring oil down through output side of the full flow oil system, and removing the plugs. Got oil pressure on cranking right off. Mechanical oil pressure gauge.
This engine is going in the '40 and is 6 volt. Is 20#s oil pressure cranking a 6 volt system satisfactory ?

Cranking speed is probably around 200 rpm at the most. I think 20 psi is a good oil pressure for cranking the engine.

Yes, that's good.

I would be happy with anything on the gauge at cranking speed.

Thank you all for sharing your experience.

Sounds alittle high, what grade of oil are you using??

Good point Ron. Shell Rotella 15W-40. Would a lighter oil be better idea, especially since the weather has turned cooler hear in MA. I do plan to put the engine in a heated area before startup.

I don't see any problem. I generally get more pressure, but I'm cranking with 12 volts. As Tubman says, if you are getting pressure, be happy and run it.

I don't see any problem either. However the heaver oil restricts flow, especially with stock bearing clearance. It seems that everybody wants to see hi numbers on the gauge, but flow through the bearing is more important.

flow through the bearings. Good point Ron. I may swap the 15W-40 for a lower viscosity.

Re: 59L startup oil pressure at crank speed.

I run 10W- 30 and my engine is 25 years old.

Yes, for stock bearings,10/30 in a quality oil does a great job, AS you open your clearances a higher viscosity canbe used, their are sme very good racing oils out there.y
