Three couples are driving our Model A's to Hendersonville,NC from Winston-Salem area on Saturday 10-10-20. We are staying until Monday, and looking for suggestions of places to go and things to see. Thanks

If Asheville is within your range, hit up the Estes-Winn Antique Car Museum. Also the Asheville Radio Museum (Sat 1-3 only or by appt).

Thanks for the replies.
I think we would rather stay away from Ashville, (safety concerns).
Good idea about the motorcycle museum in Maggie Valley, always wanted to go there.
We have been to Hendersonville before, had a good time, and the roads getting there from here make for a great ride and scenery.

Things to see and do. Carl Sandburg house. Landrum has a lot of Antique stores. Run over to Brevard on Rt.64 to the Pisga forest US 276 up the mountain to the fish hatchery, they have tours. On up to Looking Glass Falls. On up to the top of the mountain to the Cradle of Forestry, good museum. This place was established by George Vanderbilt in the late 18 hundreds which became our US Forestry Service.


I have been to all these places numerous times in my Model A. Go for it!! Dale.

Antique stores are always a hit. I think my wife mentioned the falls but wasn't sure if they were accessible. Pisgah national forest should offer some nice scenery and nice drive I would suspect. Thanks for the advice.

Brevard is interesting. Go see the albino squirrels! Lots of antique stores with real antiques....not made in China.at least that’s the way it was a few years ago. Dale G is right on above

CORRECTION
The squirrels aren’t albino just white. Interesting story as to how they got there.

Haven't heard about the albino squirrels, have to check them out.
We were thinking of the Blue Ridge Parkway but weren't sure if we were close enough to it.

Maybe try to get a tour of the VanWingerden Greenhouse Range in Mills River area. Quite an expanse and interesting automation, much innovation from when I worked there in it's infancy in the area in the 80's.

I believe the greenhouse mfg, complex will give limited tour also.

WYankee, I'm curious.... Are you taking I-40 straight from Winston, or back roads like 64 and 70? And Estes-Winn was a great suggestion.....

This is the most beautiful time of the year to be in Western NC especially on the Blue Ridge Parkway. But it's going to be busier than normal with folks driving to see the fall colors.

I wish I were in Hendersonville right now. I'd take 191 north. It crosses the Parkway south of Asheville and has the easiest entrance with no climbs. I'd go south on the Pkwy toward Mt. Pisgah and do the things Dale said. Going down 276 into Brevard might work better than up if the traffic is heavy.

Whichever way you go, that's a good loop to do.

Mt. Pisgah has restrooms. There aren't many on the Pkwy.

Thanks again for all the suggestions.
I think we start on NC150 and probably continue with NC64, and a bunch of backroads. Still planning on going but the weather is taking a turn for the worst.

Sky Top and Granddads, both apple orchards have cider, doughnuts etc. Carl Sandburgs house just down the road in Flat Rock.
Irish pub on the main drag called Hannah Flannigan's has excellent corned beef and cabbage. They used to have all you can eat crab legs, not sure if they still do that.
