other than ford green this low cost green enamel i plan to paint my motor is a baked on enamel once the motor gets hot enough, right?
now if i have anything i choose not to paint ford green and wish to antique, say using a blackening system (phosphoric based) what would be recommended for clear as a protection for that finish, is a clear enamel what i should look for ? |
Re: other than ford green use engine paint it is designed for high temps. You can get a "cast" color. I wouldn't clear coat the finish as it would probably peel and yellow over time.

Re: other than ford green Why go to all the extra trouble and expense when the proper paint is readily available?

Re: other than ford green Just curious, why not paint it the proper Ford green ! Wayne

Re: other than ford green I agree with Wayne !!! if correct appearance is important, no clear coat over the engine green, Cast blast or other new cast look paint for the exhaust manifold, or the black used on the carb or other black parts. The only place that I would consider a clear finish would be on unfinished parts to resist rust but not a glossy clear. If you apply the colors with a paint gun and enamel type paint is used, a hardener could be added for durability. High gloss finishes look over restored on the engine. Also, No primer on clean cast iron parts. Cast iron has all of the tooth needed for paint retention . If primer is used and for some reason the paint was to peel it would stick out like a sore thumb. Just my thoughts.

Re: other than ford green I would buy only a quality paint designed for engines. Your reference to "low cost green enamel" scares me. If I wanted orange, I would buy a paint for a Chevrolet and so on for other colors. Note that the surface of the block is such that brush on paints work very well.

I've also been told that multiple coats, even of the correct paint, let alone a clear coat or primer, can inhibit engine cooling, a situation we sure don't need to encourage on a Model A. |
