1934 dual temperature gauge
 

I have a dual temperature gauge for my 34.
It has been hanging for some 18 months with the gauge portion at the top and the sender unit straight down below.
Upon testing it recently before I install it, there was no red fluid showing (it did used to show).
I inserted it in boiling water and the fluid started to show, but only a small way put it in cold and it disappeared.
Repeated the procedure some more and the same happened.
Am I doing something wrong or do I have to something else to make it travel further up?
Any help appreciated.

Is the gauge completely original or is it one that had previously been restored? I ask as there is some history of the restored gauges (depending on the source of restoration) losing their fluid through the altered bulb that fits into the radiator hose. The restored bulbs I am referring to have a slotted plug in their ends.

Not familiar with issue but the gauge hanging with the bulb down is how I " burp " these . . These can get air bubbles in the line so that they show red fluid when cold . With it hanging bulb down alternate between boiling and ice water . This works well . Speaking only of stock ones here .

The temperature part of the dual gauge is completely original.
I made a gauge from 3 originals of which I was able to use the original temp gauge and housing and swap the fuel gauge part that was blocked for an unblocked part and use an excellent original gauge face.
The result is a very nice gauge.
I have been doing some hot / cold dunking this morning and the red appears to be climbing up further.
Will keep you posted.

Managed to get the red to rise to the half way point.
Have noticed a small bubble a couple of times in the red that disappeared with a slight tap to the gauge.
Am I expecting to much with just immersing in a jug of boiling water?
Should I just install and hope things sort themselves out?

If your engine heats and cools in a "NORMAL" manner, it would make more sense to make a 'mental note' that 1/2-way up the gauge is ....well, NORMAL, rather than ACTUAL "HOT" being somewhere off the top of the gauge. If it were me, I'd try to use as you have it now. But what do I know? DD

The ice water part is important !

Ignore if you are doing that already but. If you are not it is very helpful as it accelerates the expansion-contraction of the gauge fluid .

If it registers half at boiling just remember that .
A bit low but it still works .
