Extra water pump grease

I was given a couple gallons of pennzoil #362 water pump grease. Is this stuff still relevant?

Use regular wheel bearing grease in water pump.

Speaking of water pump grease, should one use a different type? Also, wondering if the grease could pass into the water jack?

I unscrew the brass packing nut and give the rear bushing a squirt of the same grease I use for everything else, Mystik JT-6 High Temp. With the nut slid ahead and me pulling the fan forward while I grease the bushing, there is almost no chance of grease getting into the coolant. But, now with the rear seal there is even less worry about grease and coolant mixing.

BTW, in the 10 years I've been running my restored water pump, I don't think I greased the rear bushing more than three times. and only checked the packing nut a couple times to see how tight it was. I keep it just lightly tightened. The rear bushing is still nice with no slop.

I always use waterproof Calcium Sulfonate base trailer bearing grease in the pump rear, but that's only because I always have several guns with different greases. Too much pumped in will surely gunk up your radiator, so be careful not to over-do it.

Re: Extra water pump grease

The Model B water pump was similar to the Model A pump and in the 1932 Service Bulletins it states that the Model B and the V8 water pumps were designed to use pressure gun lubricants, and to avoid use of special water pump lubricants. The reason given was that water pump lubricants have a melting point higher than the maximum water temperature, which allows any surplus grease to enter the cooling system and block radiator tubes. I know that is 1932 era advice and may not be applicable today with modern lubricants. Maybe someone with knowledge of todays lubricants can give us an update.
