What are the odds its still good?

I have been meaning to get back up and check out some hulks I was given to see what is left that is still good. One in a 50 ford and the other looked to be a 38 but the snow was rally deep.

I was able to lift the hood on the 50 and see that the entire engine was there including the air cleaner and radiator. The plates on the car was from the early 60's. I wonder what the odds are that the flathead engine isn't cracked? I have no idea what the water/anti-freeze situation was when it was pushed into the ditch all those years ago. I plan to get up there this summer. Its not an easy trip.

Even if the radiator had been removed, there would be enough water in the block to freeze. The bottom rail will have a crack running the length of it, not repairable.

I also figure that the antifreeze itself would break down. I need to get up there by July. I had figured on taking off what I can. It would be quite a chore to actually retrieve the engine and get it to somewhere to load it.

only the old alcohol anti-freeze will break down, glycol will not but the water in it will evaporate--engine could still be ok-lots of free parts!!

Check the oil. If it has water in the oil the oil level will be high and you will see water beads on the bottom of the stick. Spray MMO in the plug holes and down both sides of the carb BEFORE you try turning the engine. Use a parts washing gun to spray with. I have done dozens of Ford engines that sat 50 or more years and all run good. G.M.
