Random Tire Shortage Information

Certainly not to be an alarmist, but I was at my local tire shop for a tractor tire repair today, and the owner casually mentioned that he was fully expecting a tire shortage due to the Covid virus. He indicated that most tires sold in the US come from overseas; that the overseas plants are at a very limited (or no) manufacturing level, and that shipments to the United States are dwindling.
Why do I post this? Only because the availability of tires (and related rubber products) has a direct bearing on our hobby, as well as daily activities.

I'm surprised and skeptical about "most tires sold in the U.S. come from overseas".

Goodyear, Michelin, Yokohama, Pirelli, Cooper, Continental etc all have manufacturing plants here in America.

I encountered a similar problem when I bought a set of Edelbrock heads, I have been waiting over a month now , they say another delay so they will be shipped the 29th of this month. and they are manufactured in the U.S.A. we shall see if they are going to make it without a third delayed shipping time. I must have got lucky I just bought a pair of tractor tires, tubes and wheels ,The dealer said he bought a good supply about 7 months ago.

Key words "fully expecting" Time will tell how his crystal ball works.
A little research can be your friend.

He's probably setting you up for tire price gouging. I'd probably be more alarmed if he was a toilet paper dealer. 8^) Jack E/NJ

A lot of tractor tires are made in China and sold by some major outlets here in the states. I suspect China products may be limited in the coming months and years.

I remember waiting for Edelbrock heads, years ago, because the only make them one time during the year. Things may have changed.

Re: Random Tire Shortage Information

I am a fleet parts manager here & as such purchase many hundreds of thousands $ of tires thru the course of the year to keep our state wide fleet going. My Goodyear sales rep along with others have told me that due to the virus & the Ford & Chevy plants slowing production of vehicles to make health related products, tire manufactures have closed plants & laid off employees. I have had a hard time receiving tires lately & some that we use have no production dates scheduled at this time.

I think most all tires have some Natural rubber in their make-up.

We might have plenty of tire dealers here in the USA, but
I don't think we have too many rubber trees here. ;)

I hadn't heard that. Probably ought to buy some Bratton's inner tubes to have on hand.

Looks like there are still a number of tire mfg.'s here in the USA, Goodyear and Cooper are American owned the others are foreign owned but they are still making product in the USA. Check this thread:
