Helment distributor rebuild tech

This hasnt been my favorite distributor from Ford but seems as if theres been one on the bench for the last few weeks almost every week.
( i prefer the two bolt crab units)
Customers unit comes in ups and apart she goes.

This unit is a 11A ( advance designation and is marked all over with 11A) thats the degrees of distributor advance in the unit.
The only trick here is clean and then clean some more . We use a hot water ( Cuda) unit that get them pretty clean and a small ultrasonic fr the weights etc...

This set of weights was not used as someone had tuned them up with plyers before ......might use some day but had some cores with virgin weights etc and used them.....

New CS47 Napa points ( the best i believe )

Note the right hand set wasnt aligned very well, i have a old alignment tool to fix em up......see below.....

Back together and on the test machine......

Nice unit with a good advance curve ..... 11 degrees ( actually 12) at 2600 rpm...... 12 x 2 + 24 engine degrees at 2600.......add in the set timing ( usually 4 degrees ) and its a flathead perfect at 28 degreees.
Ran up to almost 5000 rpm before any float bounce etc.......
Good unit !!!!!!

Thanks Bubba. I am slowly redoing my first flathead with the helmet and this really helps.

Re: Helment distributor rebuild tech

11A is the prefix for 1941 Ford. Ford changed the advance curve in 41 that is why the plate is marked, also the springs and weights. They have to be used in combination with each other. Nice posting! Thanks

Re: Helment distributor rebuild tech

yep, great post...

these are the type of post that I don't remember seeing much, if at all on the previous forum, but were urged and more common on the HAMB. Hoping to see a lot more of these TECH posts specific to the Ford engines and cars. I know of several fordbarners who have the knowledge to put up some killer Tech posts for us less experienced members...

maybe we can get past the weekly "what oil do I run in a flathead" posts...

Thanks, Bubba - I've heard so much about you from over on the HAMB - nice to see you posting this tech article here for those that use this unit.

Re: Helment distributor rebuild tech

Thanks for the posting Bubba...........very informative. I don't suppose you could go into more detail on the dissasembly could you?
I've got one that is a "two screw coil model" marked 89 on the shaft, and an SP with a 61 on the bottom plate.
Can anyone tell me what year that would be specific to?
Thanks, Joe

Great tech article Bubba! I'm in the process of rebuilding a Crab type and have a case that the distributor primary terminal is broken off. Is there a way to replace the terminal or is this case terminal? Thanks , Ed Pitts

Re: Helment distributor rebuild tech

You have to stand on your head while working on these, Joe. The "89" is actually "68". This is a slightly shorter and slower curve than the 11A used in the late 1936 Model 68 distributor and all '37-40 78 distributors. 11A advance went into the otherwise same 78 distributor for 1941, and with its parts on a shorter shaft kept 1942--48. The number on casting is likely a mold number or such.
If distributor looks same as Bubba's, it would be a model 78, 1937--40.

SP=Standard Parts, one of the suppliers to Ford for ignitions.

Thanks for the information Bruce.....much appreciated. Joe

Re: Helment distributor rebuild tech

I believe the original post has the number - CS47??

Re: Helment distributor rebuild tech

Henry/K

The original post was NAPA CS47 for a helmet-style. So does this mean the same points will fit in the crab style?

Thanks

Jack E/NJ

Re: Helment distributor rebuild tech

Same points fit 1937--1948 and also the oddball Model 68, late 1936 with cylindrical/ pillbox looking coil. '32-36 use another set with the movable points connected on a long spring. I just posted NAPA number on some post here?? For a while they were screwed up...I ordered some at different times from Napaonline and kept getting 3/4 of the set. Wrote'em an email, pointing out that they had a correct picture of the set, and they sent me the missing bits. I think it is corrected now...some spec along the way, probably for the guy dumping parts into boxes, was likely rong. Still have it up...ECH CS47...finding stuff at napaonline is an annoying process!

Re: Helment distributor rebuild tech

I just bought a set of the CS47's from NAPA for my crab distributor. It took two boxes to get the full set. Each only had one of the movable points. Sounds like they are still screwed up. They had everything in stock except the crab style cap and it was a special order. The points look good.

Yes the terminal is replaceable. I made a special tool for removal by machining up a piece of tubing to allow twin tangs to grab the terminal outside and un thread. I got some of the terminal by thems selfs if ya need one. Get yours out first and pm me with address.........
