Stromberg 97 float setting
 

I've a stromberg 97 on my car. Have had it rebuilt by Max a couple years ago.
Have read where the gas in the bowl should be 15/32" +/- 1/32"
Also I notice the engine sits in the chassis with a bit of a slant down to the rear. The intake manifold doesn't seem to compensate for this slant. The carburetor also slants. It's not level.
Looks to be around an 1/8" in 3" of a slant. How much slant should there be?
Perhaps my front engine rubber mounts are too thick.They were there since I purchased the car.
How thick are originals?
If the carburetor isn't level and I keep the gas level set to 15/32" +/- wouldn't it be too high in the emulsion tube at the point it's in the venturi? Making it tough to get a proper idle set.
I realize lowering the fuel level will compensate for where it should be.
I'm curious if any other members have noticed this and what they've done.

With the carb sitting on your work bench.....level..........set the float
so the the free end is 1/16 lower than the hinge end while the tang on the float is gently pressing against the seated needle. Be cautious that the 90 degree bend
at the top of the tang clears the nose of the fuel inlet fitting where it protrudes

into the bowl.

I get what ur saying Charlie.
The float hinge on the 97 is perpendicular to the slant of the engine though.

Correction. Hinge is with the slant of the engine.

Is there a performance issue with the carburetor ?

None other than the float setting due to the slant of the engine.

It sounds like not much to worry about then to me. It doesn't sound like a severe angle.

I'm mainly wanting to know what the thickness of the front rubber mounts are and what others engines slant is as a comparison. Stock configuration.

Kind of a related note, I have a venturi that drips out the emulsion tube at idle. I pulled the carbs apart over the winter and cleaned them but I forget to pull the emulsion tubes. Carbs have seemed to be draining into the motor when shut off for years. Runs two 97s and a model a tank through the mechanical 8ba pump. Motor just doesn't seem to start like I think it should either....

I took some measurements at the emulsion tube where the fuel would set when the carburetor is level and fuel float set for 15/32"
The fuel level ends up 7/32" below the hole in the carburetor where the emulsion tube comes through the venturi.
With the 3.5° slant on my engine in the chassis, gas was trickling in slowly. It was always hard to start like it was flooded after it had been run for a while.
I'd have to pull the manual throttle all the way and crank till it started.
With the measurements I took where the fuel should be taking into consideration the 3.5° slant of the engine.
I ended up dropping the fuel level in the bowl at the venturi side of the carburetor to 5/8". Reset the idle speed to 10 revolutions of the fan belt in 5 seconds and took her for a test drive.
I wanted to see if I could empty the bowl on a long Hill or picking up speed quickly.
It ran well with no stall or hesitation.
After an hour drive I parking it. Came back an hour later and flipped the ignition switch pushed the starter button without pulling the manual throttle and she fired up and ran perfectly. I've tried this a few times now.
It starts and runs the same every time. Perfectly.
Something to consider guys if u've run into similar issues.
