oil leak
 

I have a new to me 31 Turdor, which is a passed on restoration project.
Ive fixed some of the problems discovered while getting to motor running
I have a oil leak coming from the drain hole of bell housing.
The motor looks like a nice rebuild.
The question: Is it a leak form missing gasket of rear cam or rear main?
Maybe something else, but what is correct troubleshooting ?

Visual inspection should tell you if the gasket between the rear of the engine block and flywheel housing is either installed backwards or missing. You’ll need a good light to see this.

If the gasket is installed backwards, it will be quire obvious as a semicircular section of bare gasket will be sticking out. If the gasket is installed correctly, you should be able to see it between the two metal surfaces with a bright light.

Since oil leaks from other parts of the engine will run toward the flywheel housing and seek the lowest spot, they can often appear to leaks coming from the drain hole - which should have a large cotter pin in it, BTW. Check carefully for leaks from the oil pan, valve chamber gasket and oil return tube.

How high is the oil level on the dipstick---- the owners instruction book says "up to the f", , model a is very good at eliminating excess oil
You could take off the half moon shaped cover on the flywheel housing and see if the source of the leak is obvious

If the engine has very few miles on it or has not been run for a long period of time, the rings may not be seated and excess blow-by may cause oil to leak thru the rear main. I would get some miles on the car and see what happens. Also, after the engine is broken in if it is "new", run 10/40 or 20/50 oil. It may help slow an oil leak.

Synthetic oil usually will leak more than conventional oil.

But first, look carefully for the source of the leak.
