1939 light weight engine According to references in the EV8 38/39 book, Ford made a few special light weight engines for 39. These were 85hp and had front main oil pumps like the 4cyl tractor engine. Does anyone have one of these and can take pics and share info on it?

Re: 1939 light weight engine I've never seen one, never heard of one, nor talked to anybody who has . . . interesting!

Re: 1939 light weight engine Most likely something that was developed for aircraft applications.

Re: 1939 light weight engine could have been their new 60 engine, with that new oil pump drive. Memory getting alittle foggy!!!
Gramps PS the 91a was the lightest big main crank assy |
Re: 1939 light weight engine The Oct. 1952 HOT ROD Magazine had an article on the last known aluminum block V8 that Henry Ford made for airplanes. As I recall, the engine was owned by a fellow in Lexington, KY.

Re: 1939 light weight engine Thanks deuce for posting that magazine.
Are you the fellow in KY who has that engine? |
Re: 1939 light weight engine You're welcome. No believe it or not I was only three in 1952! LOL

Re: 1939 light weight engine I've read about them and believed it was for some experimental aircraft use. Over the years, I've picked up aluminum 59AB water pumps that had some type of aviation stamp or casting mark on them. I've since sold them, wish I didn't.
I believe someone on the HAMB posted a pict of an old Grancor add selling a few of these engines. |
Re: 1939 light weight engine I have been looking for years. I understand the top of the engine near the intake is stamped LW, oil pump in the front.

Re: 1939 light weight engine .
You know, it would hard to dispute that this "last surviving" (of original 10) aluminum Ford flathead block was anything other than THE HOLY-EST of Holy Grail "hot rod" parts on the planet! Talk about 'bragging rights'! Coop http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e1...earborn-61.jpg |

Re: 1939 light weight engine This was a automotive use engine and it is mentioned several times in running changes. It was "a new design 85hp engine assembly for use in (Deluxe units only)). It had front mtd oil pump, improved oil pan, oil pan drain plug like N engines and a new design distributor.
