Clayborne engine overhaul stand attachments maybe available?? A SORTA UPDATE?
 

A few weeks ago I bought an incomplete Clayborne stand in Illinois that was offered on C-list. The stand was originally equipped with attachments that were not for a Flathead V-8 so those mounts were cut off and new ones made to use on a Flathead sideways using the exhaust ports exactly 90 degrees from the intended axis and were very homemade. I've gotten rid of those pieces and will be taking my stand and a block to a Machine and Welding Company nearby on Monday to have proper attachments made(I hope). After a phone conversation and e-mail with pictures they think could make everything including the ring at the front on the stand. I'm posting this for those that are looking for those attachments. I'm lucky that the ring I have will probably be used with new mounts welded on it but seeing as they will have everything there at once and others have been looking for these mounts I thought I should post this if anyone is interested in a possible replacement for mounts that are few and far between. That's a nice engine stand Gary and a great article to go with it. I hope to work on a Steven's engine stand for my T motors over the winter.

I can't help but notice those trombone and brass instrument cases behind your stand in the first pic, do you teach music there?

I acquired one of these stands, but have never used it, I am told it is easier than the kr wilson but would like some input on the subject from a user of this style stand

My main employment is repairing musical instruments for just over 30 years now but I tend to sneak in other projects from time to time. I found this type of stand very appealing the first time I saw one and after I got it showed It to a coworker who new what it was because he used one at the local garage he worked at back in 1955! He’s a Ford guy and loves the stuff I come up with.

One of the benefits is that you can arrange the deck face to be horizontal. This would be useful if you want to use a portable boring machine. Another benefit is that the engine is supported from both ends so the temptation to hang off just the bellhousing is gone. (Preventing potential breakage)

Have a couple of the stands But I would be interested in a set of the brackets for a Early Ford V8 engine. kerk

That's a great point Kerk. This project will be for pre '49 blocks, will know more late next week.

I have the same/similar stand that you have - would love the correct brackets for a flathead. Are you thinking to making multiple sets (appears to be the case) - any idea as to associated parts/prices you're thinking of doing?

Been using mine for over 60 years, the only modification I made was, bracket to hold up the block so the front adapter could be removed and the cam degreed in. I remember it was used when I got it.

Now as Paul Harvey used to say "The rest of the story". On Monday it will be 6 weeks since my stand and block were taken to a local machine shop that was highly recommended by 2 people. They have been in business for 50 years and do tons of work so even though some times for estimates and actual fabrication are long past due I'm remaining hopeful that eventually I'll get some answers. The biggest problem is the numbers, if I wanted 100 attachments made I would be on the top of the "to do" list but if it's like in this case maybe 10 or so attachments the priorities are much different. I'm very patient and am trying not to be one of those customers that call or email constantly even though that is very difficult to do but rest assured I'm still working on this. If you had some good drawings and were not concerned about exact copies these could easily be made. I would just slice off a piece of the correct diameter pipe then take some 3/16 diameter wire and weld it to the edges bending it around as you do or you could preform it. Drill some holes for the stops and you have it. The difficult or really important part is getting the dimensions so when the brackets bolt up you have a straight axis through the cam. This is a very doable project.
