7.0 Earthquake in Anchorage Alaska
 

There was a massive 7.0 earthquake in Anchorage, Alaska. Hope CarlG and any other Barners there are OK.

Being on the West Coast we have gone through a number of earthquakes in the 4 range a 7.0 is unimaginable.

I have to rely on my imagination when it come to earthquakes. We never have any of consequence. A couple of weeks ago, one at 2.6 made the news because even that was so unusual. I hope all is well in that shaky part of the world.

The Richer Magnitude Scale is logarithmic. For example, a quake of 5 is 32 times more powerful than a quake of 4 magnitude. A 7 is really rockin' and rollin'. Your car won't be where it was when you parked it.

I may wrong (it haapens according to my wife!) but I thought 1 on the Richter scale was a 10 fold increase and yes, 7.0 is bumpy.

Because of the logarithmic basis of the scale, each whole number increase in magnitude represents a tenfold increase in measured amplitude; in terms of energy, each whole number increase corresponds to an increase of about 31.6 times the amount of energy released, and each increase of 0.2 corresponds to approximately a doubling of the energy released.

Thanks for your concerns. We did have a 7.0 earthquake followed up 5 minutes later with a 5+ aftershock. Over the past 24 hours there have been hundreds more after shocks, a lot of them being in the 5+ range. While there was lots of shake rattle and roll, there was no loss of life or injuries. Just lots of clean up and road repair. Schools were closed on Friday and won’t reopen till next Wednesday. Suspended ceilings and plate glass in office buildings did not fair too well. The Model A guys I have talked to have no damage to their cars. It will be a good while before we get back to “normal” but we will make it.

Good to hear Carl....as a former resident of Anchorage, I remember quakes being fairly frequent up there. Hopefully your house did not suffer much damage. The photos I saw of the roads looked pretty bad in places.....they will need to fix those ASAP, as there are few ways into and out of town.

Having experienced the Northridge earthquake (6.7 magnitude) here in SoCal several years ago, I agree with your statement. It does take a while for things to get back to normal, but they will. I wish you, all the Model A people up there and all the people of Alaska affected by this as speedy a recovery as possible.

Glad to hear you’re OK Carl.

Most of the newer buildings on the West Coast are built with stricter building regulations but some of the older buildings are suceptible in earthquakes.

Alaska had a bad one in 1964 I remember. Was 9.2 on the Richter scale.
