Model A Day at Gilmore Cancelled!!!

PLEASE understand how difficult it was to make this decision to cancel Model A Day 2020!

Re: Model A Day at Gilmore Cancelled!!!

It’s called a decision based on common sense ! No person in their right mind is willing to risk their life ( die ) in order to view antique cars. The administration is to be congratulated.

Disappointing, but understandable. Looking forward to next year.

Thank you for that.

Good plan ...

I watched one person die of it and if I never see it again, it will be too soon!

With sadness but it is the wise decision. There will be another year.
I’m still on for my seminar if they wish for next year.

A most sensible decision. I just lost a friend of 50 years to Covid-19.

Re: Model A Day at Gilmore Cancelled!!!

Considering the average age of the attendees, the decision was clearly the correct one. Good thinking MAFFI!

Next year will even be better !!!! All good things are even better if you have to wait! Disappointed for sure but not worth the risk . Thank you to Mark and all the people who have work so very hard to try to put on this. Great event

I am definitely OK with whatever decision is made on this, ...but with that said, we were discussing this the other day and so I would like to hear y'alls opinions on the following.

What needs to change before YOU personally would attend any type of event like this? In other words, let's assume they have not found a vaccine by this time next year for this virus. Let's say that the numbers are down a tad from what they are now but there are still new cases being reported, -and just as in the case of present day Pneumonia or strains of Influenza where we still see people succumb to those type of diseases, do you think we will ever feel comfortable enough to attend these type of events again?

Rather than putting it on as "model A day" to promote the hobby, instead, market it as a protest (perhaps against the horse and buggy?) and people will feel safe enough to show up in droves. Apparently the high charged emotions that come with protests create an immunity to COVID-19.

Good question Brent.
My wife and I would not attend a large gathering of elderly folk, like ourselves, until a vaccine with a success rate of 80% reliability is developed and a minimum 50% of the population, including ourselves, have received the vaccine. Attending any large gathering without these criteria met, to me, is irresponsible.
Good Day!

Yes, I have heard others say something similar. The irony is the Henry Ford research center claims that it will be a minimum of 18 months, -and if successful, it will be fasted vaccine ever created. I think the average time for creation of effective vaccines is like 5 years. I think the Polio vaccine was like over 5 years, the AIDs vaccine has been over 20 years in the making, the Ebola was like 2½ years, and some are closer to 10 years.

So without a effective vaccine being developed and in use, that means we really can't have a Model-A Day, -or a Hershey Swap Meet, a MARC/MAFCA National Meet, ...or whatever event for another two years (-or longer). If so, what do you think will happen to this hobby? The social aspect of the Model-A club membership is as big (-or bigger) than just owning an A. Additionally, places like the Gilmore and the Henry Ford need attendees to survive financially. Can many of these places survive for that long without financial support derived from such events??

I realize the health of ourselves and of others is (-should be) priority, but it does make you stop and think for a bit, we may not be able to have a 2021 Model-A Day, -or even a 2022 Model-A Day.

Re: Model A Day at Gilmore Cancelled!!!

I wouldnt think that decision would have been hard at all. As far as when I will go out, good question. All shows in my area have been cancelled. There is one car cruise afternoon that is going and I have been to it twice now. I stay outside and keep my distance. The infection rate will have to drop significantly across the country for me to feel comfortable going anywhere in mass. I have no desire to go out to eat dinner, go to an amusement park or anything of the like. Originally I figured by about August this was going to be behind us, now I am thinking it may be next August before things are starting to normalize.

I'm with you Dave. Our club members are staying in touch and we see a few from a safe distance, but for now we have no events planned. A few of us did take our Model As out and did a drive by of a couple of hospitals to show our support for the first responders and medical staff.

And what, exactly, does that have to with anything we are discussing in this post?

Stay safe.
