Mothballs
 

Is there any better smelling alternative to mothballs to protect wool fabric? My wife is not fond of the “perfume.”

Hmm... I’d hate to provide critters with ready made nesting material. Lol

Mint packets. They make little bags you can place around the inside of your car.

Still check car regularly. They (mice) can do a lot of damage in a very short time.

We just had to junk my Uncles Lincoln Continental, he did not drive it for three months, interior was ruined by mice. He had a 50 bag of bird seed in the garage, half ended up in the car. A real mess, and the smell!

I had mice make a nest out of Bounce dryer sheets many years ago when I tried using dryer sheets. These were the kind with the "perfume" on them that are suppose to work to repel rodents, so forget dryer sheets unless you want nests made from them. What I do now is take a store bought pie pan with a clear plastic cover and drill 12 to 15 1/4" holes (doesn't matter how many) in the plastic cover and put 10 or 12 (again it doesn't make a difference of how many you you put in the aluminum pie pan) and snap the cover back on. You can barely smell the moth balls but rodents have much, much better nose function than people and don't like the small. On top of that, the moth balls last a couple years instead of disappearing in a month or two when left out in the open. I have never noticed any rodent damage in 10 to 12 years I have been doing this. In addition the beauty of this technique is when you remove the pie pan, the moth ball smell disappears quickly and since the moth balls are not laying on parts of the vehicle, the smell doesn't permeate anything it is laying on, like fabric. I am not sure odorless mothballs would keep rodents from damaging vehicles.

Last spring I removed the rear seat in my new 31 Victoria and was shocked to find that moths had turned the lower portion of the seat cushion into swiss cheese in several spots. Fortunately it is at the bottom on the side where the cushion is against the side panel and is not visible when the seat is put back in place. But it is not to far from where all the stress is from the hog rings holding the fabric to the seat springs. Needless to say, I developed a strong preference for the smell of moth balls. I also placed a spray bomb in the back seat on the floor and closed the car up for a week. I found a new reason why it is good to have the windshield pushed open. When I leave the car for the summer (going back to Maine) I will be renewing the moth balls.

On a positive note, I haven't seen any moths or mice and after a couple of weeks of airing out, the smell drops off significantly. I don't know what the alternative would be but I am not in the mood for a new upholstery job. Ed

Peppermint oil. There are formulas you can get on-line. Works for me.

Try "Bug MD". It is a moth trap using the two pheromones from the two types of moths that eat cotton and other fabrics. No smell, moths are attracted into the simple cardboard little glue trap house and they're stuck. The traps will work up to 12 weeks.
I think moths are harder to control than mice and this is the problem shew01 is having.

Anyone had luck with the high frequency “noise maker”
I’ve got a perfect solution for those not faint of heart!
I have a barn snake somewhere in the shop (it’s a big shop!)
Never see it but find his shedded skin sometimes. But not seen a mouse in several years.
Another feature....wife never comes to the shop!

I have had rodents chew open the packets of "Fresh Cab" in my cars. Sad because it is made locally.

Never used any of the products above, I have heard the ultrasonic stuff works, I had a buddy that swore by an opened bar of Irish Spring soap! May put a bucket of moth balls with a bar of soap?
Squirrels are a problem in my garage.

AND, I think I would rather have mice than a no legged critter!!
